Russia in Georgia to settle security

Russian foreign ministry officials have told reporters that their troops won't leave Georgia until security issues on the ground are resolved.

The Russian military is now in almost total control of the main Georgian highway from the Black Sea to the capital, Tbilisi.

Earlier, the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a peace ...

...with Georgia.

The agreement obliges all forces in Georgia to withdraw to positions held prior to the Russian invasion.

But a spokesman for the Russian foreign ministry, Andrei Nesterenko, says Russia won't leave immediately because extra security measures are needed.

He says Russian forces are completing security operations, neutralising old depots of ammunition and military equipment left by the Georgian army.

Mr Nesterenko says booby-traps installed in some of the houses where the people live also needs to be neutralised.
