Friday 25th July, 2008 It is believed lawyers representing the former Bosnian-Serb leader Radovan Karadzic have appealed against his extradition to the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague.Karadzic's lawyers had announced they intended to lodge an appeal minutes before a deadline expired. In order to gain time they ...
...they would post a letter from a remote postbox in Serbia.Reports from prosecutors, who believe the appeal will not succeed, say Mr Karadzic, who was arrested on Monday, could be transferred to the Netherlands as early as Monday. The war-crimes suspect has been refusing food in his cell in Belgrade.Meanwhile, more details are emerging about Mr Karadzic's life in hiding. He practiced alternative medicine not only in Belgrade but also in the Austrian capital Vienna, using other assumed identities.Austrian police came in contact with him when his apartment was searched in the middle of a murder hunt, but they did not recognize him.Karadzic has been quoted in the Serbian Blic tabloid as saying: "Hiding was not difficult for me except for the fact that I was separated from my family. I attended conferences and stood before cameras. I exclude the possibility that somebody tipped me off since nobody that I was in contact with knew that I was Radovan Karadzic.Blic also reported that Karadzic was on his way by bus to a fortnight's holiday at a spa outside Belgrade when arrested on Monday.Karadzic faces 11 charges, including genocide, for atrocities carried out during the 1992-96 Bosnian war.
