Election announced in Pakistan

Pakistan's Election Commission has announced parliament should elect a new president on September 6th to replace Pervez Musharraf who stood down amid threats of impeachment.

While nominations will open on Tuesday, the co-chairman of the Pakistan People's Party, Asif Zardari, has emerged as the frontrunner for the presidency, with backing from ...

...party and opposition politicians.

The presidency will be voted on by a joint sitting of Parliament and the four provincial assemblies.

The two leaders of the Coalition are at odds over whether to reinstate the judiciary sacked by former president Pervez Musharraf when he imposed emergency rule last year.

Nawaz Sharif says he was given an assurance by the party of slain former premier Benazir Bhutto that it would happen within 24 hours of Mr Musharraf's resignation on Monday.

Mr Sharif has threatened to quit the alliance if the judges are not reinstated, a move that would threaten the future of the four-party coalition.
