Chinese parents in sad protest over dead children
Thursday 12th June, 2008 Anguished Chinese parents have attended the destroyed schools where many of their children were killed in the May earthquake.Marking one month since China's devastating earthquake, parents demanded answers about the flattened schools.Poor construction work is suspected as a reason for the collapse of the schools.The thousands of crushed children have become a politically charged legacy of the disaster, creating public anger about corruption, lax regulation and poor construction of shoddy school buildings.One local parent described the construction of a local school building, saying the concrete was like talcum powder and the steel was 'as thin as noodles.Prior to the parents congregating at the sites of old school buildings, police told volunteers to leave the area and detained a local dissident who had offered to support the grieving families.Dozens of police stood over the rubble at some of the school sites.A planned memorial by parents of hundreds of children who died at one school was prevented by police who went door to door warning them to stay away.The government had attempted to pass the one-month date without major ceremony, focusing instead on rebuilding and messages of patriotic unity.
