31 LTTE fighters among 36 killed in Lanka: Army

Colombo, Sept 05: Fierce clashes in the restive northern Sri Lanka killed at least 31 LTTE militants and five soldiers, as the military repulsed a major attack by the Tamil Tigers in the rebel stronghold of Killinochchi, the Army said on Friday.

...Vedamkulam in Vavuniya district during clashes with the security forces yesterday, the military said.

In a separate incident at Palamoddai in Vavuniya, the security forces gunned down five Tamil Tiger militants and injured three yesterday, the army said, adding one soldier also lost his life during the confrontation.

In the rebel stronghold of Killinochchi, LTTE’s counter attack was met successfully by the security forcesin the general area of anikkadanadu yesterday, the officials said.

"Troops who successfully repulsed the enemy fire killed four Tamil Tiger rebels and injured nine others," the Army said, adding three soldiers injured in the fighting were admitted to a hospital. Separately, the forces gunned down one rebel at Vannarikulam in the region yesterday, it said.

One soldier was killed and three injured in the same area due to fire and explosion of anti-personnel mines and booby traps by the Tamil Tiger rebels, the Army said.

Separate confrontations in Andankulam and Kurundankulam in northeastern Welioya yesterday led to death of four Tamil Tiger rebels, the military said, adding one soldier was killed due to an explosion in Ulattuveli area in the region.
