Two alleged kidnappers killed in police action

Two alleged kidnappers were killed in an encounter with the police in Dhanusha district Sunday morning.

Reports quoting police said the shootout took place at Dudhmati Bridge along the Janakpur-Kugha road when a police team tried to rescue one Ram Dubar Sah kidnapped by the gang.

One person killed in the encounter have been identified as Udgar Mandal while another is yet to be identified.

Police also recovered two pistols and bullets from the gang.

Cases of abduction have significantly grown in Terai districts. Over half a dozen alleged kidnappers were lynched by villagers in different parts of Terai in the past few weeks.

Three suspected arm peddlers arrested in Kathmandu

Police have arrested three suspected arm peddlers in possession with a large number of automatic guns, their bullets and some illegal drug in Kathmandu on Tuesday.

Organising a press conference in Kathmandu on Wednesday, police said Ganesh Singh, 29, alias Tinku of Saptari, Anil Baniya, 25, alias Vicky, of Sarlahi and Mukesh Kumar Dash, 25, of Rajbiraj had been arrested from Siphal in possession of the contrabands.

The police arrested the three in an ‘information based operation’ about 8:30 pm Tuesday with two Short Machine Guns (SMG) and four rounds of magazines used for the SMG, a gun fitted with silencer labeled made in England, two pistols labeled made in Japan, one pistol labeled made in USA, one pistol labeled made in Italy and various kinds of bullets and some illegal drug resembling heroin.

Operation Lucky uncovers gang in Devkota abduction

KATHMANDU, Aug 14 – Police have busted one of those involved in the August 3 kidnapping of neuro-surgeon Dr Upendra Devkota's daughter from their residence in the capital. The girl was freed after payment of a huge ransom. A police investigation dubbed 'Operation Lucky' arrested Hem Bahadur Magar, 35, who originally hailed from Ghorlikhark- 6 of Dhankuta district, and also established the identities of four others involved in the abduction. Police said the other members of the organized criminal gang–some of them already listed in police records–are still at large.Senior police officials engaged in the investigation worked in close cooperation with the victim's family. Police managed to spot the house used by the gang after learning that the gang's dog was named Lucky. Coincidently the police sniffer dog used in the case was also called Lucky. The operation was named after the dogs.According to police, the arrested man was living at Nakkhu, Lalitpur. He had earlier been arrested for robbery in 2001 and was freed later. Police found Rs 243,000 in cash, a private car, four motorcycles, a scooter, two pistols, 33 rounds of ammunition and two plastic hand grenades, among other things, in the gang's possession.Police said the other kidnappers are Krishna Rai, 35, alias Bijaya of Dhankuta district, who identifies himself as a manpower agent, Sidhartha Lama, 42, also of Dhankuta, who identifies himself as a land broker, Raju Thapa, 34, of Rudrapur in Rupandehi, also a self-styled land broker, and Keshav Darlami Magar, 30, of Dharan, Sunsari, who owns Laxmi Cyber at Nakkhipot, Lalitpur. Lama, who used to work as a security guard with an international company, was earlier arrested on the charges of robbery in 2001 and later freed.Police had announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for any tip-off regarding their hide-outs. To prevent them from going abroad, police had begun the process for issuing an Interpol red corner notice.After the abduction, the gang had kept Dr Devkota's 15-year-old daughter blindfolded in the rented flat of Krishna Rai and Hem Bahadur Magar at Nakkhu.The next day around noon, she was freed after her father paid a ransom of Rs 13 million.Talking to media, Dr Devkota admitted that he had paid the sum for the sake of his daughter's life, but the initial demand of the kidnappers was around Rs 100 million.Dr Devkota said the night of the kidnap, a group of masked men barged into his residence after taking the security guards under control, and demanded jewelry and a huge amount of cash. As there was no large sum of money in his home, the kidnappers abducted his daughter and threatened to kill her if ransom was not paid.Devkota said his daughter was ready to go with the kidnappers after he could not pay the ransom immediately.After keeping tight-lipped for the last 10 days, police and the Devkota family spoke on Wednesday about the abduction. Additional Inspector General of Police Keshav Baral, chief of the Crime Department, said the investigation was carried out in close cooperation with the victim's family and it would not have succeeded without their help.SSP Upendra Kant Aryal, chief of Metropolitan Police Crime Division, urged the general public to maintain close cooperation with the police in order to foil organized crime.

Devkota's daughter's kidnapper held

TThe police today identified five abductors involved in the kidnapping of neurosurgeon Upendra Devkota’s daughter and produced one of them, Hem Bahadur Magar alias Hemanta, aka Gore, before the mediapersons here today.Addressing a press meet today, Additional Inspector General Keshav Baral announced an award of Rs 50,000 for a tip-off on the whereabouts of any of the four absconding kidnappers.He added that the process to issue red corner notice through Interpol has already been initiated.After 10 days of investigation, Metropolitan Police Crime DivisionHanuman Dhoka identified the gang’s leader as Siddhartha Lama, 42, of Sunakothi, Lalitpur. Lama hails from Sukepokhari-1, Dhankuta.He was arrested from Boudha in 2001 in a case of robbery. He introduces himself as a manpower agent and used to work as a security guard with an international company.According to the police, the abductee was kept in the rented house of Krishna Rai alias Bijaya and Hemant at Nakkhu-13 in Lalitpur sub-Metropolitan City.The police also confiscated Rs 246,000, a car, four motorbikes, a scooter and three helmets used in the abduction from Nakkhu.Police uniforms, two pistols, two magazines, 33 bullets, two plastic hand grenades, four khukuris, banned narcotic drugs, medical kit, jewelleries and mobile sim cards were also seized.Senior Superintendent of Police Upendra Kant Aryal of MPCD said organised criminal gangs operating in the capital were well-informed and were exploiting the loopholes in the legal system.Dr Devkota appreciated the efforts to nab the criminals.“Had the police been well-equipped, the investigation process would have been quicker,” he added.Dr Devkota said instead of defaming the police force, public should cooperate with them.Dr Devkota’s daughter was abducted on August 3 and was freed the next day.Four of the gang on the run •Gang leader Siddhartha Lama, 42, of Sukepokhari-1, Dhankuta. Four Killed in Separate Incidents in Tarai

Four persons were killed in separate incidents across the country within the past 24 hours.Bara-Parsa coordinator of the Akhil Tarai Mukti Morcha (ATMM), Jeetendra Tiwari, was killed when the police and ATMM cadres clashed at Piparpati Jabdi-4 in Bara district this morning.The police said it swung into action when cadres of the ATMM were about to attack a police team at Piparpati Jabdi-4 near the Pasaha Bridge. Tiwari was killed in action, the police said.Two pistols, three bullets, two socket bombs, a mobile set and documents were seized from Tiwari’s possession, Superintendent of Police at the Bara District Police Office, Hemanta Pal, said.In Nawalparasi, a gang shot at Bhim Bahadur GC, 27, a technician at the Basabashi-based Chitwan Cement Factory last night.GC, a resident of Chandani VDC-3, Kanchanpur, succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital, the Nawalparasi District Police Office said. In Dhanusha, Nepali Congress cadre Jeebchha Mahato, 50, of Bateshwor village, was shot dead last night.Mahato was shot dead by a gang between Naktajhijha and Bateshwor VDCs on his way home at 8:30 pm, Dhanusha police said.A report from Biratnagar said Manoj Poudel of Dangraha-6 was killed when armed dacoits shot at him last night.A dozen robbers looted the village at midnight, Morang police said.According to the police, Manoj was shot in the temple. The dacoits also detonated two socket bombs. Ten tolas of gold, three tolas of silver and cash amounting to Rs 25,000 was looted from 10 houses, the police said.

Four arrested with arms in Birgunj

Four persons, including an Indian national, were arrested with arms by the police at Parsa district headquarters Birgunj on Thursday.

Bachha Miya of Motahari of Bihar state in India, Deepak Aryal and Sambhu Kalwar of Jeetpur in Bara district and Sanjaya Mandal of Sarlahi district have been arrested, police said.

Two socket bombs, two pistols, six rounds of bullets and two mobile phone sets were recovered from them, Senior Superintendent of Police Ramesh Shekhar Bajracharya informed.

Police said the persons were involved in carrying out lootings in Birgunj area by threatening the locals in the name of armed groups.

Criminal racket busted

Police busted a gang of seven persons involved in killing, kidnapping and looting several persons from various parts of the country.
Making public those alleged at a press conference today, SP Sarbendra Khanal at the Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, said the organised gang which was involved in more than 10 crimes in the Valley was busted with two pistols, four bullets and a revolver from different parts of the country.
Those arrested include mastermind Sujan Poudel, 24, of Ramechhap, Kamal Thapa, 25, of Rupandehi, Buddha Gurung, 34, of Nuwakot, Devendra Kumar Gharti, 19, of Baglun, Anil Lama, 18, of Nuwakot and Chhiri Shepa, 24, of Ramechhap.
Six persons were arrested from Butwal and Sherpa was arrested from Bouddha this afternoon, Khanal said at a press conference.
Khanal said Sujan is a former Nepal Army personnel and was in the list of most-wanted criminals.
He claimed it was one of the “biggest “ gang busted by the police made several months.
The police said the group shot contractors Barun Singh Lama, 25, of Dolakha and Ashish Gurung, 26, of Khotang at Baneshwor on January 9.
The group is charged with shooting Subarna Lama at Koteshwor and Deepak Tamang at Sitapaila a few months ago.
The group was also involved in kidnapping Santosh Agrawal and looted Rs 500,000 from his brother Anil on May 12, the police said.

Looted arms recovered

KHOTANG, Jan 27 – Security personnel on Saturday recovered some of the ammunition looted by an unidentified group from three police posts in the district five days ago.  Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Dipak Thapa, said 14 bullets, along with one set of Chinese pistol magazine was found at Faktang VDC-2.  He, however, did not specify how the police recovered the weapons.  Additional security personnel have been mobilized in the area and the search operation has been intensified, added DSP Thapa. Five days ago, an unidentified armed group had raided the newly reinstated police posts in Chisapani, Faktang and Devishtan in the district and made off with at least seven rifles, two pistols and hundreds  of bullets, apart from two communication sets. 

Locals call Khotang banda demanding security

KHOTANG,Locals at Chisapani Bazaar in Khotang district Friday called banda demanding security in the district.

The locals said that the banda was announced demanding proper security in the district as they felt insecure after an unidentified group raided and looted arms from three police posts in the remote eastern hilly district.

The have submitted a memorandum to the security authorities demanding establishment of an Armed Police Force base camp in the district.

An unidentified armed group had stormed three newly-reinstated police posts in the southern part of remote Khotang district on Monday night and Tuesday morning and took away at least seven rifles, two pistols, 528 bullets and two communications sets.

The group of around 50-60 persons equipped with sophisticated weapons had attacked the police post at Faktang, Chisapani and Devisthan.

This is the first time an armed group has raided police posts and fled with arms after the government and the ex-rebel Maoist signed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement to bring over a decade long conflict to an end.

The police personnel are still clueless about the whereabouts of the looters.

Unknown Groups Attack Khotang Police Posts, Loot Weapons

Unidentified groups attacked three police posts in Khotang district last night. According to the Khotang district police office, separate groups of around sixty persons attacked three police posts at Chisapani, Hukajor, and Devithan and looted arms and ammunition.
DSP Deepak Thapa said that the clash ensued for two hours after unidentified group ransacked the police posts. No human casualty was reported, Thapa added.
The attackers looted four 303 rifles from Chisapani post and three 303 rifle and two pistols from Hukajor post, DPO said. There were eleven policemen in Chisapani and nine in Hukajor while the incident took place. Attackers looted police uniform from Devithan police post as it remained empty in night, police added. Police have launched a massive search operation in the area after the incident, Thapa said. No group has claimed the responsibility for the incident.
