Naomi Campbell planning to return to India for Bollywood

Monday, March 30th, 2009

International supermodel Naomi Campbell might be looking at a career in Bollywood after she floored film executives at the Lakme Fashion Week relief fundraiser in Mumbai recently.

Campbell was in Mumbai March 27-31 to walk the ramp in aid of victims of the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist strikes and after taking to the runway in a sari and being mobbed by fans, she was introduced to Bollywood stars, including Deepika Padukone, Farhan Akhtar and Kunal Kapoor, reports Mirror online.

‘Naomi has never modelled in India before, but she loved every minute. At the end of the show, two well-known Bollywood producers approached her and asked her if she’d be interested in screen testing,’ said a source.

‘Naomi was incredibly flattered and plans to come back to Mumbai for more talks whenever she next has a break in her schedule,’ the source added.

Carla Bruni embarrassed by Berlusconi’s ‘tanned Obama’ comment

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Carla Bruni, the wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, has criticised the prime minister of Italy for referring to American President-elect Barack Obama’s ’suntan.

‘When I hear Silvio Berlusconi… joke about the fact that Obama is ‘always tanned’, that makes me feel funny,’ she told ‘le Journal du Dimanche’ newspaper.

‘That will be put down to humour. But often, I am very happy that I have become French,’ said Bruni, who became a French citizen after marrying Sarkozy, The Times newspaper reported Monday.

Prime Minister Berlusconi, on a visit to Moscow last week, said the relative youth of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, 43, and Obama, 47, should make it easier for Moscow and Washington to work together.

‘I told the president that (Obama) has everything needed in order to reach deals with him: He’s young, handsome and even tanned,’ he was reported to have said through an interpreter.

Berlusconi, who has been slammed in Italy, defended the remark against critics, calling it ‘a great compliment.

‘If they have the vice of not having a sense of humour, worse for them,’ he said.

The outspoken Bruni, while backing a campaign called ‘Yes, we can’ for affirmative action in France, also attacked France’s failure to integrate black and African immigrants.

‘Power (in France) has often had the same face: that of men who are white and ageing. That is why I can identify with this appeal. Without political measures we will be waiting too long,’ she said.

Bruni revealed that during a modelling assignment in the American state of South Carolina in 1992, she was asked to eat in private with her fellow-models as the local restaurant would not accept the presence of one of her colleagues – black supermodel Naomi Campbell.

Naomi Campbell barred from flying British Airways

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

London: Supermodel Naomi Campbell has been banned from flying with British Airways after she was escorted off a flight last week and arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, media reports said on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old, released on bail pending an investigation into the incident, said she hoped the row with the airline could be resolved ”amicably”.

BA said it had not made any announcement regarding Campbell. When asked about a report in the Mirror tabloid saying she had been banned, a spokesman said: ”We don’t comment in detail about matters relating to individual passengers.

”All incidents of abuse against passengers or staff are taken extremely seriously by BA and will not be tolerated. We deal with cases on an individual basis and will take whatever action we feel is necessary.”

Campbell’s spokeswoman in London added: ”Naomi has been flying with British Airways for nearly 30 years and has been a good customer. She hopes this can be resolved amicably.” Police are investigating the disturbance last Thursday at Heathrow’s new Terminal 5.

Campbell was on a British Airways flight due to depart for Los Angeles when one of two bags she had checked in went missing, according to her spokeswoman.

BA has been beset by problems with the high-tech check-in and baggage handling systems at the 4.3 billion pound terminal. Hundreds of flights were cancelled and tens of thousands of bags have gone missing.

It is not the first time Campbell has been in trouble with the law.

She spent five days mopping floors as part of a community service sentence in New York last year after throwing a mobile phone at her housekeeper during an argument over a pair of jeans. She was also ordered to attend anger management classes.

Naomi leaves hospital after cyst surgery

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

Sao Paulo (Brazil): British supermodel Naomi Campbell left a Brazilian hospital on Friday, five days after she was rushed in for surgery, the hospital said.

"The patient has recovered well from her surgery," the Hospital Sirio-Libanes said in a statement.

Dr Jose Aristodemo Pinotti, the Brazilian surgeon who attended to Campbell, was quoted by Globo news as saying he had given her permission to leave but recommended she stay in Brazil resting before resuming work.

The hospital said Campbell, 37, was admitted on Sunday although her spokesman in Los Angeles said earlier she went in on Monday.

The spokesman said she had a cyst removed. Pinotti told Folha de S Paulo newspaper on Friday that the model did not have a cyst but declined to specify what she was treated for.

"When a patient asks for discretion, be it Naomi or just plain Maria, I respect their wishes," he told the newspaper.

Campbell often visits Brazil, where she has been known to show up at Carnival festivities and is frequently photographed at parties with Brazilian celebrities.

British newspapers reported last week that she had become engaged to Marcus Elias, a 49-year-old Brazilian financier, after meeting him at a fashion party in Sao Paulo earlier in February.

Brazilian media said Elias was frequent visitor to her bedside during her stay in the hospital.
