UML stages protests against attack of Pokharel

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

CPN (UML) staged demonstrations in different parts of the country to protest the recent attack on party general secretary Ishwor Pokharel by Maoist cadres in Ramechhap.

In Kathmandu, UML cadres staged a protest rally at Sundhara and Ratnapark areas, chanting slogans against ‘Maoist highhandedness’ and demanding action against those involved in the attack.

A group of Maoist cadres had pelted stones at the vehicles carrying UML general secretary Pokharel and politburo members Pashupati Chaulagain and Rabindra Shrestha in Ramechhap. The UML leaders escaped unhurt in the attack.

Amid strong reaction from the UML, Unified CPN (Maoist) had suspended Rajan Dahal, deputy district secretary of Young Communist League (YCL), who led the group that attacked Pokharel. The Maoist party expressed worry over the incident, saying the attack was against the party’s policy.

On Thursday, general secretary Pokharel lodged a complaint at the National Human Rights Commission demanding action against those involved in the attack.

UML lodges complaint at NHRC over Ramechhap incident

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

CPN (UML) submitted a memorandum at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Thursday demanding action against the Maoist cadres who attacked the vehicles carrying UML general secretary Ishwor Pokharel and two other leaders.

General secretary Pokharel handed over the memo to NHRC chairman Kedarnath Upadhyay at the NHRC office in Pulchowk.

The memo signed by party chairman Jhala Nath Khanal stated that a group of Maoist cadres led by deputy district in-charge of Young Communist League (YCL) Rajan Dahal pelted stones at the vehicles of Pokharel and politburo members Pashupati Chaulagain and Rabindra Shrestha with the intention to ‘kill’ them.

The Unified CPN (Maoist) has suspended Rajan Dahal for three months for going against the party’s direction not to attack the leaders and cadres of other parties.

Maoists warn NC, UML activists

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

RAMECHHAP: District Organisation Committee of the Unified CPN-Maoist on Tuesday issued an ultimatum on Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML cadres. They should either leave the district within the next five days or quit the party.

Rajan Dahal, deputy secretary, Ramechhap of the Maoists, made his party’s intention clear. He issued a press release that accused the NC and UML supporters of conspiring with foreign forces.

It is learnt that the Maoists’ central leadership has directed its party wings to go for the jugular of its rivals in Ramechhap. However, there is a silver lining for the opposition supporters. They are free to stay back if they snap ties with their respective parties and choose to remain neutral.

The Maoists have warned of dire action against all those who defy their diktat. The move seems to have precipitated following their assent to the “unconstitutional move of the President to reinstate Chief of Army Staff Rookmangud Katawal at the behest of foreign forces”.

Ramchandra Khadka, district chairman, NC, alleged that the eviction drive was a growing pointer to the Maoists’ authoritarian intent. But the district leaderships of the “cornered parties” are not ready to give in. They will act as per the decision of their respective central committees.

Shanti Prasad Paudel, district joint secretary, UML, echoed Khadka.

Ramchandra Biyogi, chairman, Civic Network, dubbed the move unfortunate since it was against

democratic norms and the rule of law.

Chief District Officer Jitendra Bhandari feigned ignorance about the threat. However, he promised that he would bring the guilty to book.

Taking a cue from the UCPN-M’s district committee, area units, too, have issued similar notices.

Paudel alleged that the Maoists had threatened them not to open their party offices from tomorrow.

Maoist supporters also took out a protest rally in district headquarters Manthali today, condemning the President’s unconstitutional decision that has been drawing nationwide flak from the party’s activists.
