Police wade into Georgian demonstrators

Police in Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi, have clashed with demonstrators in anti-government protests.

The protests have been occurring daily in the Georgian capital, where demonstrators have been trying to force President Mikheil Saakashvili from office.

On Wednesday, the police fought off stick wielding protesters with batons after they had tried to storm a police compound to free three activists.

A number of protesters, including the leader of Georgia’s opposition, Levan Gachechiladze, were injured in the fighting.

The demonstrators have accused President Saakashvili of undemocratic behaviour for his handling of the five-day military conflict with Russia last year.

Washington, Aug 12: Georgia's President Mikheil Saakashvili has vowed no surrender even as Russian troops pressed deeper into his country and he said the capital Tbilisi was being threatened.Asked during a phone interview with CNN yesterday what he would like Russia's leaders to know, Saakashvili responded: "I think they should hear Georgia will never surrender.Georgia will never surrender.Saakashvili, who earlier in the day said in an address to the nation that "the majority of Georgia's territory is occupied," accused Russia of premeditating the attack, which began several days ago."No matter how superhuman a military you have, if you have not been preparing the attack for months and months, for God's sake, how can you mobilize into another country 1,000 tanks within hours if it's not a premeditated attack on a " he asked."They are menacing the capital," he added, vowing that the "Georgian people will never surrender freedom and democracy, because democracy is stronger than any of their tanks, any of their bombings, any of their brutal equipment."We will go to the end, because we once lost our Earlier yesterday, Russian forces moved briefly into the west Georgian city of Senaki to prevent Georgian troops from regrouping for attacks on the breakaway region of South Ossetia, the cause of the worsening conflict.Russia sent thousands of troops, tanks and air support into South Ossetia on Friday after Georgia launched an offencive to seize control of the province, which broke from Georgia in the early 1990s.

Georgia to keep team at Olympics

Tiblisi/Georgia will not pull its team from the Olympics as its war with Russia expanded Saturday, with fighting spilling outside the Caucasus province of Ossetia and both sides moving reinforcements into the region.Media reports from the Georgian capital of Tiblisi said President Mikheil Saakashvili would ask the team to remain in Beijing.

Georgian troops ready to leave Iraq

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has ordered home the country’s contingent in Iraq to join the fight against Russia.The Georgian president made the announcement at a Tbilisi meeting with members of the Georgian opposition.The Iraq brigade to be recalled includes the entire 2,000 man force deployed in support of US operations in Iraq’s central provinces.Georgian officials have repeatedly refused to say when and how the unit, with its combat experience and US training accounted the best in the Georgian army, would get home.Meanwhile, Georgia has said it will not pull its team from the Olympics.Media reports from the Georgian capital of Tiblisi said President Mikheil Saakashvili would ask the team to remain in Beijing.

US sends envoy to Georgia seeking ceasefire

The US is sending an envoy to help bring about a ceasefire in the escalating conflict in Georgia's breakaway South Ossetia region, the US State Department said Friday.Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice had also been in contact with a number of foreign officials to seek an end to the hostilities, which threatened to turn into a full-out war between Russia and Georgia.Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili earlier said Russian troops had invaded his country, after Georgia sent forces into South Ossetia and claimed to have taken control of the capital.'We support Georgia's territorial integrity and we call for an immediate ceasefire,' State Department spokesperson Amanda Harper told DPA.
