Another Koirala eyes Bollywood

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Almost two decades after Nepali beauty Manisha Koirala succeeded in carving out a niche for herself in India’s fiercely competitive film industry Bollywood, a second aspirant from the Himalayan republic is trying to follow in her footsteps.

It is a 28-year-old hunk from Kathmandu, Kanij Koirala, who could succeed where former Miss Nepal Jharana Bajracharya failed, since besides sharing the illustrious Koirala family name, Kanij has also caught the eye of India’s showbiz authorities by making it to the top 10 of a recent pageant for men.

Kanij, the son of a UN official, strode through 10,000 applicants to make it to the top 10 in the Gladrags Manhunt 2009 before being pipped at the grand finale in Mumbai by Sonepat lad Prateek Balhara.

The 6ft1′ Kanij, who looks rugged with his shoulder-long hair, has caught the eye of Bollywood director Sajid Khan, whose comedy ‘Heyy Baby’ in 2007 cast Akshay Kumar, Fardeen Khan and Riteish Deshmukh in the roles of three love-struck young men pressed into baby-sitting with disastrous results.

Khan has offered a role to the new Koirala on the block, Nepal’s leading daily Kantipur said. Two debutant Bollywood directors, whose names were not revealed, were also said to have shown interest in signing him up.

In the past, the Gladrags contests for men as well as women have given Bollywood its stars John Abraham and Lara Dutta.

After storming Bollywood in 1991 with her debut film Saudagar directed by Subhash Ghai, Manisha Koirala, the granddaughter of Nepal’s first elected prime minister B.P. Koirala, went on to become a diva with such acclaimed hits as ‘Bombay’, ‘Akele Hum Akele Tum’ and ‘Khamoshi’.

However, her career started waning from 2003 and she became unpopular in her own homeland by supporting King Gyanendra, who tried to seize absolute power with an army-backed coup.

Though Manisha tried to push the career of her brother Siddharth in Bollywood, he managed to hit the headlines more for his romance with Bollywood siren Ayesha Takia than meaningful roles.

After Manisha and Siddharth, a third Nepali talent tried to enter Bollywood.

The smouldering Jharana Bajracharya, who was Miss Nepal in 1997, was signed up by a Bollywood director for his thriller ‘Love in Nepal’ where singer Sonu Nigam tried his hand at becoming a leading man.

However, the film bombed at the box office and Jharana was criticised at home for showing too much skin.

Kanij Koirala is not related to Manisha or Siddharth and is remembered in Kathmandu not as an aspiring model but as an avid trekker.

Nepal’s fledgling film industry is considered too tiny to confer stardom and models, actors and singers cherish dreams of making it big in neighbour India.

Neetu Fills In For Lara Dutta & Tusshar Kapoor

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

This one is clearly unprecedented. Though it is a common practice to see actors filling in for others when a remake is being made, seldom has it been observed that a single actor doubles up for two actors. For the Telugu remake of a successful Hindi film, a leading lady has filled in as a package deal for a second lead hero as well as the item girl.

The girl who has done this is Neetu Chandra who would now be playing the role of Tusshar Kapoor as well as Lara Dutta in the Telugu remake of Raj Kumar Santoshi directed Khakee. The film is called SATYAMEVA JAYATE and is directed by Jeevita Rajasekhar.

Confirms Neetu Chandra, “I loved Khakee and there was no way I would have missed an opportunity to be a part of the story, even though it was made in Telugu. In any case this is not the first time that I am working in a project down South. I have earlier also acted in GODAVARI.

Talking about her presence in the film, Neetu reveals, “I play the role of a subordinate cop which was enacted by Tusshar Kapoor in the original.

The character was so well written that it was noticed in spite of Akshay Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and Ajay Devgan in the film. Icing on the cake was to jig to the dance number that is based on ‘Aisa Jadoo Daala Re’.

‘Aisa Jadoo Daala Re’? Wasn’t it a standalone item number choreographed on Lara Dutta in Khakee?

Winks Neetu, “That’s the beauty of the script. The number has been amalgamated well into the role of the cop I play and the dance sequence is justified too. Composer Chinna has come up with an excellent tune which stands up for ‘Aisa Jadoo Daala Re’.

The film also stars Sheril Pinty and Sanjana as the leading ladies other than Neetu Chandra. “I am happy with the part I play as it is that of a lead role. I picked it up because it had lots of action.

In fact you won’t believe the kind of stunts I have performed for the film”, says Neetu who is not new to action and is a taekwondo black belt who has earlier represented India.

The film sees Milind Soman stepping in as a main villain with Atul Kulkarni being repeated from the original cast of Khakee. Apart from SATYAMEVA JAYATE, Neetu Chandra would be seen in films like OYE LUCKY LUCKY OYE, FLAT NO. 13B and KUSARPRASAD KA BHOOT in the coming months.

Spicezee Bureau

Mumbai, Aug 18: Bollywood’s ace actor, Shah Rukh Khan made an appearance with an élan at good friend Saifu’s birthday party, which was thrown by ladylove Kareena at ‘Four Seasons’ in Worli Mumbai on Sunday night.

Besides SRK, the grand party also saw the who’s who of Bollywood which included- Soha Ali Khan, Sussanne Khan Roshan, Gauri Khan, Farah Aqeel Ali, Imtiaz Ali, Karisma-Sanjay Kapur, Konkona-Ranvir Shorey, Kunal Kohli, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Shabina Khan, Arbaaz-Malaika along with Amrita Arora and boyfriend Shakeel Ladak, Atul-Alvira Agnihotri, Dino Morea-Lara Dutta and Karan Johar.

While the group supporting SRK (evidently) was spotted at the do, Salman Khan and his family chose to attend a party thrown by Subhash Ghai’s to celebrate his wife Rehana’s birthday at the JW Marriott in Juhu, inspite of a special invitation from Bebo.

According to insiders, while SRK, KJo, Gauri, Sussanne, Farah etc. sat at a clear distance from Salman Khan’s khandaan, Bebo and Saif had a tough time looking after the two groups and had to divide their time between both.

Apparently, Arbaaz Khan went to Ghai’s party first and dropped in for Saif and Kareena’s party much later but Sallu chose to head back home instead.

Guess Bollywood’s biggest stars are determined to let the cold war rage on. Grow up guys!

Bachchan's what excited me to join the tour: Preity Zinta

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Mumbai, July 23: There are few celebrities in Bollywood who can face up to the collective might of the Bachchan family and yet not feel awed — Preity Zinta is one of them. The actress is currently on a 40-day tour with the Bachchans — Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek and Aishwarya — taking part in a singing and dancing extravaganza staged in 11 cities across North America, Europe and the Caribbean.Zinta said she knows having the Bachchan tag for the tour helps."I have my own sensibility and I am confident of myself as an actor and a person. I am also sensible enough to know that when there are three Bachchans on a tour, people are going to talk about it much more than anyone else," Zinta told a news agency.Zinta was not part of the original line-up announced for the Unforgettable Tour but was roped in after Lara Dutta and Bipasha Basu opted out."It doesn't matter who's been on and off. What excited me was that the Bachchans were going and that different actors were coming on in different parts of the world and that’s a treat to the audience,” said the 33-year-old actress.Zinta is confident the three-hour shows would also appeal to Westerners."It’s not just the Indian audiences any more and that's the beauty of our cinema. The last show I did, there were people from Marrakesh, Africa, Germans, French. Our cinema has opened doors to different countries. It’s not the conventional Hindi audience any more.

Star-studded Zee Cine Awards held in London

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

London: It was a star studded red carpet in London on Saturday evening as Bollywood celebrities walked in for the Zee Cine Awards ceremony.

Actress Shilpa Shetty walked in along with her ‘good friend’ Raj Kundra looking stunning, " I’m wearing a Cavalli creation and my jewellery is done by Anmol, and its really fantastic," she said.

Actress Diya Mirza went with the spirit of competition as she said, "May the best man win."

But it was Kareena Kapoor who seemed to have the biggest fan club at the event, newcomer Deepika Padukone was all praises for Kareena as she said, " I think Kareena this year has done very well and I think Aishwarya Rai in Guru was fantastic, they truly deserve to win."

Elder sister Karisma Kapoor was also present to support Kareena as she said, " I am sure my sister is going to win hands down and that is the reason why we are here to support her."

When Shilpa Shetty was asked who should win she was quick to reply, “Well I hope I do, since I’m nominated."

Kareena had boyfriend Saif Ali Khan for company who it seems wanted to be a part of the Kapoor family — Karisma, Rishi, Shammi and their namesake, Anil Kapoor.

Lara Dutta, Diya Mirza, Anupama Verma and VJ Sophie added to the glam quotient of the evening while exiled painter M F Hussain made a rare public appearance.

Filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra however had his reservations about the entire award business, "These are essentially TV shows, and they are not award functions so we should look at them like that. It’s about coming together, like a carnival and Indians as such like to come together and celebrate each others success, that’s why we are here," he said.

The filmmaker does have a point else how do you explain the Bollywood Queen Award given to Gauri Khan and the Entertainer of the Year Award given to Ritesh Deshmukh.

As for the night’s big winners, there were no big surprises, Kareena Kapoor got the Best Actress Award for Jab We Met, while Shah Rukh Khan took home the Best Actor trophy for Chak De India — which also won the Best Film Award and Aamir Khan was named the Best Director for Taare Zameen Par.

'Inspirational' story: Bollywood copies right

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Mumbai: Remember the Hollywood film My Cousin Vinny starring Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei? Now get ready to see the film in its Bollywood avtaar titled Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai starring Govinda, Tabu and Lara Dutta. Only this time, producer-director Ravi Chopra has officially bought the rights of the original.

“The whole attitude of the industry is very transparent today and it should happen in all walks of life. I was going to adapt the film anyway as am not going to make the same film. And I thought it’s fair that since I was adapting it I should talk to the people who had made it so that there is no confusion,” Chopra said.

It’s something that’s unheard of in Bollywood, where the custom is to plagiarise the original without even acknowledging the source.

Take a look at some of the biggest hits of 2007 – Bheja Fry, Partner, Welcome and Heyy Babyy, all of them lifted from Hollywood or foreign films.

INSPIRED HITS

Bollywood Movie

Original

Bheja Fry

The Dinner Game (France)

Mickey Blue Eyes

Heyy Babyy

Three Men and A Baby

Even some duds are copycats:

Dot The I

Chhodon Na Yaar

The Blairwitch Project

Manorama Six Feet Under

And some are partially inspired. Like the track of Sharman Joshi in Life in a Metro is from The Apartment and Rice Plate in Dus Kahaniyaan is a straight lift from the Oscar-winning short film The Lunch Date.

“I know a lot of young writers who go to meet producers and directors and they are given a DVD saying you have to make it from there,” writer Anjum Rajabali said.

“You might say that they lack the confidence in writers but the fact is that they lack confidence in themselves too. You may not know how to craft a script but you can have your own idea. But they don’t have confidence in their idea. So they insists ki idea bhi wahan se lo,” she added.

While the copyright laws don’t mean much to Bollywood, Ravi Chopra is surely setting an example of sorts.
