Madge: I May Adopt A Child From Malawi

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Madonna has thought about taking in a second child from Malawi.

The singer adopted David Banda, 3, from an orphanage in 2006.

‘It\’s something I have been considering, but would only do if I had the support of the Malawian people and the government,’ she says.

‘Many people – especially our Malawian friends – say that David should have a Malawian brother or sister.’

Madonna, 50, is also mum to Lourdes, 12, with Carlos Leon, and Rocco, 8, with ex-husband Guy Ritchie, 40.

‘Everything between [me and Guy] is very amicable,\’ she adds.

\’We both agree that our children should always feel a deep connection with both their parents.

‘It is our responsibility to give them that foundation.’

Madonna has been linked to Brazilian model Jesus Luz, 22, since they appeared in a W magazine photoshoot in December.

Indian outfits to dazzle at New Zealand’s wearable art show

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Fashion guru Manish Arora’s ‘Butterfly Dress’ and three other Indian design outfits will feature at New Zealand’s most coveted fashion and arts extravaganza opening Thursday.

The 2008 Montana World of Wearable Art (WOW) Awards show in Wellington will showcase ‘Emerald Tentacles’ designed by N.P. Jayaraj & Pooja Bedi; ‘I the Centre’ by Pooja Gosain; and ‘Cockroach Bra’ by Pooja Rajput, besides Arora’s creation.

Arora’s hand-embroidered Swarovski crystal-bejewelled ‘Butterfly Dress’, created for last year’s Paris fashion week, featuring over 1,000 hand-embroidered butterflies sewn on to the dress by 10 craftspersons will be part of the static exhibition.

‘As the garment is very intricate and best enjoyed close up, it will be on display in the foyer for the WOW show season and then at the WOW museum in Nelson for the next six months,’ a spokesperson for Tourism New Zealand (TNZ) said.

‘Arora will be visiting New Zealand for the first time in November.

Seven Indian designs were created for the 2008 WOW through an endeavour between the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) and TNZ, and three designs were shortlisted for their creativity, innovation and theatrical impact.

The three shortlisted Indian design outfits will be showcased at the 2008 WOW show alongside garments from international designers hailing from countries as far afield as Britain, the US, Canada, Japan, Thailand, Germany and Israel.

As sculptor Suzie Moncrieff, who is WoW’s founder and creative director, said, ‘A significant part of WOW’s success is the overwhelming support of The Montana WOW Awards Show by international designers.

‘I thank FDCI for their support in promoting WOW in India and hope that we continue getting such high quality garments for future shows.

Jayaraj and Bedi are from Pearl Academy of Fashion, Delhi; Gosain is from NIFT, Delhi; and Rajput is from SNDT College, Mumbai.

This year, the World of Wearable Art Ltd signed a memorandum of understanding with the FDCI to encourage design students and professionals in India to showcase their creative talent before an international audience. This received an overwhelming response with young designers from across the country entering their creations for 2008 WOW.

WOW is held every September in Wellington and attracts an audience of about 33,000 per season.

As a sponsor of WOW since 2001, TNZ chief executive George Hickton said, ‘WOW is an ideal opportunity for us to show our international audiences that New Zealand is more than just its landscapes; we are a vibrant nation with a sophisticated art scene and an entrepreneurial spirit. There is no other event quite like this.

In its 20th year, the show is a unique concept where designers are encouraged to challenge their creative boundaries. Some of the past entries have included materials as diverse as car parts, fishhooks, business cards, sausage skins, human hair and salmon skins.

I Can’t Go Through It All Over Again: Shilpa

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

“I can’t go through it all over again” declares Shilpa Shetty, when she was asked if she would take part in this year’s ‘Big Boss’.

For starters, Shilpa happens to be the ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ winner cum actress cum entrepreneur cum many other avatars bundled into one!

She exclaims the above mentioned famous words in the latest issue of ‘People’, the niche magazine, of which she also happens to be the cover-girl.

Not just this, she also has made many other confessions, which includes her relationship with her boyfriend- the London based entrepreneur Raj Kundra.

Not many know the fact that Raj was also a part of the Akshay-Karisma flick Mere Jeevan Saathi (as a producer), and the recently released Strangers that starred Jimmy Sheirgill with Sonali Kulkarni and Nandana Sen.

The good news is that Raj is also a part of a film venture that Shilpa is producing! That doesn’t mean that Shilpa will be saying adieu to heroine roles. Testimony of this is the fact that she is having her next venture The Man coming up with Sunny Deol.

When asked about the difference between being an actress and a producer, she simply blushes in her trademark style to say that “You don’t get as pampered as an actress”.

Well, looking at Raj’s deep and dedicatedly committed eyes, he truly looks like the ‘Pampering Personified’ types! If that’s the case, where’s the point to complain, Shilpa?

US country singer Kenny Rogers turns 70

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

US country singer Kenny Rogers, whose hits like Lucille and Lady capitulated him to the top of both pop and country charts, turns 70 Thursday.

His duets with Dolly Parton (Islands in the Stream) and with Sheena Easton (We’ve Got Tonight) belong to the classics of American music, and there’s no sign that despite advancing age and white beard that Rogers will hang up his guitar any time soon.

‘I really, really love what I’m doing. People survive longer if they love what they’re doing. Because you just don’t quit,’ he said in a recent interview.

He’s also kept youthful by the twins delivered by his fifth wife Wanda Miller five years ago. Rogers has three other children from previous marriages.

Born Aug 21, 1938, in Houston, Texas, Rogers was one of eight children in a poor Texas family. At age 13, he taught himself to play guitar, then founded a series of bands starting in high school.

Nearing age 40, he had his first hit, Lucille. Typical of the plaintive cowboy songs of ordinary people that he is known for, the song told of a woman who walks out on her farmer husband, leaving him in the lurch.

‘You picked the fine time to leave me, Lucille,’ the man sings. ‘Four hungry children and a crop in the field.

Rogers is modest about his success, despite the millions of dollars he earns every year from his art.

‘I’ve never considered myself a great singer, but I am a great storyteller,’ he said.

That approach gave him the crossover into the pop charts, such as Lady and the duet with Kim Carnes, Don’t Fall in Love with a Dreamer.

He has brought out a series of new albums, including Water and Bridges in 2006 and the single, I Can’t Unlove You, which hit the US Top 40 recently.

Wily HIV fools immune system by recombining

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

When a second strain of wily HIV virus infects someone after the first, they swap genetic information, creating a third, recombinant strain, successfully outwitting the immune system.A study has shown how and where viral strains swap DNA may be determined by the immune response against the original infecting strain.'The implication that recombination events are selected by immune responses identifies a new mechanism for the virus to escape the patient's immune system,' said Hendrik Streeck, a co-author of the paper.'This finding also has worldwide implications for the development of more complex strains of HIV,' added Streeck. He is from the Partners AIDS Research Centre at Massachusetts General Hospital (PARC/MGH).Part of the immune system's response against HIV is carried out by HIV-specific CD8 T cells or cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs), which can identify and kill virus-infected cells.Previous research has shown that the effectiveness of CTL response varies depending on which version of an immune system molecule called HLA Class I an individual has inherited. The current study was undertaken to investigate why an HIV-positive research participant known to have a powerfully protective Class I allele called HLA-B27 began to experience rapid increases in viral levels much sooner than would have been expected. An examination of blood samples from this individual revealed that his immune response against HIV had predictably controlled the virus for about a year and a half after he was first diagnosed. The effective CTL response was primarily directed against a short segment of the Gag protein typically targeted in HLA-B27 patients.Analysis after the abrupt increase in viral levels showed that the patient had become infected with a second strain of HIV, and two months later it was found that the two strains had exchanged portions of their Gag sequences initially targeted by his CTLs, allowing the virus to escape from that immune response. The patient's viral loads stabilized for a while but rose again months later, because of a second HIV mutation that more effectively evades control by HLA-B27 had developed.

Ex-Kelly employee testifies singer appears on sex tape

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

CHICAGO — A recent employee of R. Kelly testified Tuesday that she didn’t want to believe the R&B superstar appeared on a sex tape at the center of his child pornography trial because he was such a good boss. But now she’s sure he did.

Lindsey Perryman, who worked as a personal assistant to Kelly and his family on and off from around 2000 to 2007, was among the latest witnesses to identify Kelly and the alleged victim as the ones on the graphic 27-minute videotape.

"I didn’t want to think it was them," a sometimes anxious-looking Perryman said, the 41-year-old Kelly sitting at the defense table just yards away.

Perryman said she never saw anything that might make her think the Grammy-winning singer might be involved in anything untoward, even after he was indicted in 2002.

"He treated the people that worked with him extremely well," Perryman said. "There was never any reason to walk away and say I would call the police."

Kelly is charged with 14 counts of child pornography for allegedly videotaping himself having sex with an underage girl. He has pleaded not guilty and faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Kelly’s attorneys have said he is not on the tape, even noting that the singer has a mole on his back and the man on the tape does not. The alleged victim, now 23, has also denied she is on the tape — putting the onus on prosecutors to call witnesses who can testify it is her.

Perryman told jurors she saw the tape for the first time in December 2007, after prosecutors approached her. That first time she wasn’t sure it was Kelly and the alleged victim, but she became "110 percent" certain after viewing it again, she said.

"The image I saw looked exactly like Mr. Kelly," she said, adding she was "shocked" and "disturbed" by the video.

Perryman said she saw the alleged victim numerous times, including when she would come to Kelly’s Chicago music studio. She recognized the girl as the one in the video by her cheekbones, as well as by the "distinctive" way she moved her mouth, smiled and talked, she told jurors.

Prosecutors claim the tape was made between Jan. 1, 1998, and Nov. 1, 2000, and that the young female in the tape was born in September 1984.

Several other prosecution witnesses also testified Tuesday that the female participant on the videotape was the same person prosecutors say was as young as 13 at the time.

Some sounded more convinced than others.

Benny Edwards Jr., who once sang in a youth group with his relative, the alleged victim, took the stand for the prosecution wearing a black T-shirt with the words "The Rebel Dread" on the front. The 25-year-old seemed hesitant, telling jurors only that the man and female on the video "favored" Kelly and the alleged victim, but that he couldn’t be sure it was either.

Tjada Burnett, a family friend of the alleged victim, was more certain, saying she recognized the female by her "cheeks, her nose, her facial structure," and said she could have been about 12 or 13 years old at the time the tape was made.

Earlier in the day, Kelly lawyers accused Raven Gengler of lying to help the prosecution’s case when she testified that she’s certain the girl on the videotape was her childhood friend. Gengler, 22, said she first saw the video after downloading it several years ago from an internet file-sharing site, after the tape had become the talk of her neighborhood.

Within hours of their opening statements last week, prosecutors entered the VHS tape into the record as "People’s Exhibit No. 1" and played it in open court. Also last week, several witnesses, including a relative of the alleged victim, testified that they recognized her in the videotape.

Although Kelly won a Grammy in 1997 for the gospellike song "I Believe I Can Fly," his biggest hits are raunchy ballads like "Ignition" and his current single, "Hair Braider." He is scheduled to release a new album in July.

We Got Measly Incentives, Say Departing Saints

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

Giving continuity to the ages-old tradition, the Pashupati Goswara Karyalaya (PGK) on Saturday offered cash and sweet to the sadhus (saints) before their departure. It also threw a feast in their honour.
Based on their ‘ranks’, the PGK provided Rs 151 to Rs 751 to 2,500-odd sadhus, who had poured into the Pashupatinath temple from within the country and India to mark the Mahashivaratri festival. However, many sadhus said they were not satisfied with the treatment they received.
Two years ago, the king had offered money, skin of leopard and deer to the saints, who had arrived for the festival. However, with the revival of democracy, the tradition of giving away leopard and deer skin has become a thing of the past. With the king’s cultural rights clipped, the PGK is solely overseeing the farewell.
On Saturday, each Naga, Shree Mahanta and Digambar sadhu got Rs 751, while only two highest-ranking sadhus got Rs 2,100 each. The second-class Mahantas got Rs 551 each, Mahapurus Rs 351. While each Sanyasi and Bairagi sadhu got Rs 251, Fakirs got Rs 151 each.
Shree Mahanta Ganga Mata, who hails from Himanchal Pradesh and has been visiting Nepal for 25 years, said the mere travel fare is around Rs 3,000. The money we got is peanuts, she said, adding, "We came to Nepal with lots of expectations, but the treatment we got has disappointed us." We used to get more money and perks in the past, she said, adding, "I no more feel like coming here."
Mahanta Santosh Giri from Junna Akhada in Himanchal Pradesh complained, "Leave the money matters aside. We did not even get enough firewood to make Dhuni — the religious fire.
Chief of the PGK Megh Raj Sapkota said the PGK could not do more for the sadhus due to budget constraint. This year, Rs 1, 693,000 was allocated for the sadhus.
"Land is the source of income for the guthi (trust). Our income has declined because the Maoists have captured and distributed most of our land," Sapkota said.
Firewood was in short supply due to the Tarai bandh, he said, adding that somehow they brought in 50 tonnes of firewood from Chitwan. "We are trying our best to give continuity to the tradition."

Fidel Castro bows out, finally

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Ailing revolutionary icon Fidel Castro permanently gave up the Cuban presidency today, ending five decades of ironclad rule of the island marked by his brash defiance of the United States.
In a message published by the online version of the Cuban Communist Party newspaper Granma, the 81-year-old Castro said he would not seek the presidency again when it is decided later this week. “I neither will aspire to nor will I accept — I repeat — I neither will aspire to nor will I accept, the position of president of the Council of State and commander-in-chief,” Castro wrote, almost 19 months after undergoing intestinal surgery and handing power temporarily to his brother Raul Castro.
US President George W Bush said today that Fidel Castro’s decision to step down should begin a “democratic transition” in Cuba, eventually culminating in fair polls.
“I believe the change from Fidel Castro ought to begin a period of democratic transition,” said Bush, who signalled no change in the tough US policies towards Cuba.
