NRT End ANFA Academy's Dream Run

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Anil Gurung struck twice as New Road Team (NRT) beat ANFA Academy 2-0 to enter the final of the 10th Budha Subba Tuborg Gold Cup Football Tournament here at the Dharan Stadium on Wednesday.
The win put the star-studded NRT into the final here for the first time ending the ANFA Academy’s dream run. The Under-19 boys had beaten Tribhuvan Army Club and Nepal APF Club in previous matches.
Gurung put NRT ahead in the 15th minute when he beat ANFA Academy goalkeeper Dinesh Thapa in one-to-one situation and headed home his second goal in the 66th minute following a cross from substitute player Subash Rai.
The goals put Gurung, who was later named the man of the match, on top of the scorers’ list with four goals. Nirajan Khadka of Friends is second with two goals to his credit.
"My boys were under full pressure in the first half. They tried their level best in the second half, but failed," said ANFA Academy coach Kishor KC. ANFA Academy also lacked the services of Ganesh Khadka, who was suspended for the match due to two yellow cards in two previous matches.
Skipper Nirajan Malla, who was injured during the quarter-final match against APF, was also not in the full swing. He had a chance in the 87th minute but under pressure from three NRT defenders he shot well above the cross bar.
Unlike ANFA Academy, the NRT players played better than their match against Jhapa XI and earned praise from their coach Raju Kaji Shakya. "All the players showed dedication during the match," said Shakya. "The ANFA Academy failed to play openly on Wednesday," he added.
On Thursday, NIBL Friends Club will take on Bengal-Nagaland Railway Club of Kolkata in the second semi-final. Friends are expected to face a difficult situation against the Indian team as goal-scorer Nirajan Khadka will be on the sidelines serving the one-match suspension due to double yellow card.

Budha Subba Tuborg Gold Cup: Friends Oust Friendship

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

Shishir Adhikari and Bharat Khawas scored in the extra time as NIBL Friends Club defeated 10-man Friendship Club of Bangladesh 2-1 and entered the semi-finals of the 10th Budha Subba Tuborg Gold Cup Football Tournament here at the Dharan Stadium on Tuesday.
After the goalless 90 minutes of play, Adhikari put Friends ahead in the sixth minute of the added time and Khawas doubled the lead three minutes later. Murad Ahmed scored the consolation goal for the visitors.
Adhikari gave Friends the lead in the 96th minute from close range following a free kick from Anjan KC, while Khawas doubled the tally in the 99th minute through a spot kick. Friends earned the penalty after Bangladeshi club defender Ramjan Ali Molan brought down Nirajan Khadka inside the d-box. Ahmed pulled one back in the 105th minute in counter attack. Khadka was named the man of the match.
The visitors were reduced to 10 men in the 79th minute. Referee Kiran Giri expelled Mohammad Kabir Mohasin after the midfielder showed unsporting behaviour protesting the referee’s decision to show him the yellow card.
Earlier, the Bangladeshi team had to substitute its regular goalkeeper in the 29th minute when Nazamir Ahmed injured his leg while saving Nilendra Dewan’s attempt. He had also denied Dewan in the 19th minute.
Excited with the win, Friends coach Mrigendra Shrestha said his boys would win the semi-final match against BN Railway of Kolkata if they gave continuity to the day’s performance. He also said that the opponents were weak compared to the Friends players.
On Wednesday, surprise semi-finalists ANFA Academy — who stunned Tribhuvan Army Club and Nepal APF Club in previous rounds — will take on star-studded New Road Team.

Budha Subba Toborg Gold Cup: Hosts Dharan Dumped Out

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

BN Railway of Kolkata defeated hosts Dharan FC (red) 1-0 in the second quarter-final of the 10th Budha Subba Toborg Gold Cup Football Tournament here at Dharan Stadium on Sunday.
L Javola scored the solitary goal of the match in the 81st minute that also earned him the man of the match award.
The hosts were unlucky on two occasions when the hosts hit cross bar in the second half. Dipen Shrestha’s header hit the woodwork in the 74th minute while Pradeep Maharjan’s strike rebounded to play through the cross bar in the 85th minute.
The visitors dominated the match in ball possession but the hosts created more opportunities. BN Railway goalkeeper Santosh Goswami saved Sudip Limbu’s strike in the 18th minute and denied Santosh Sahukhala in the 34th minute.
Dharan glovesman Kiran Chemjong made a spectacular save in the 42nd minute when he made a full-stretch dive to save BN Railway skipper Sujit Malo’s powerful strike.
BN Railway coach Tapan Jyoti Mitra accepted that the luck was not the hosts’ part. "The match could have gone either way," said Mitra. Dharan FC coach Suraj Khaling blamed the finishing by the strikers. "We could have won the match, had the strikes not muffed up so many chances," said Khaling.
On Monday, ANFA Academy will take on Nepal APF Club in the third quarter-final match.
