Belgian city goes veggie one day a week

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

The Belgian city of Ghent is about to become the first in the world to go vegetarian at least once a week.

Starting this week there will be a regular weekly meatless day, in which civil servants and elected councillors will opt for vegetarian meals.

Ghent means to recognise the impact of livestock on the environment. The city, 50 kilometers west of Brussels, threw a party on Wednesday to celebrate the first veggie day.

Tom Balthazar, a Ghent city councilor, says abstaining from meat one day a week «is good for the climate, your health and your taste buds.

A public fanfare this Thursday marks the start of a regular weekly “meatless day” in which the city’s civil servants and elected councillors will opt for vegetarian meals in recognition of the impact livestock have on the environment.

According to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), livestock is responsible for 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The UN says livestock is responsible for nearly one-fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions, hence Ghent’s declaration of a weekly “veggie day”.

Public officials and politicians will be the first to give up meat for a day. Schoolchildren will follow suit with their own veggiedag in September.

It is hoped the move will cut Ghent’s environmental footprint and help tackle obesity.

Around 90,000 so-called “veggie street maps” are now being printed to help people find the city’s vegetarian eateries.

PM avoids May Day Rally for ‘recreation’

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Friday escaped to Wildlife Resort, which is located some 30 km northwest of the capital, avoiding a mass meeting organized on the occasion of International Labour Day.

PM Dahal’s trip to the resort, which was dubbed as a recreational one, came at a time when the spat between the Maoists and the Nepal Army (NA) over the dismissal of Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Rookmangud Katawal has taken a nastier turn.

The PM visited the scenic spot with his family and he was accompanied by other Maoist leaders including Barsa Man Pun.

A source close to Dahal defended his deliberate absence from the mass meeting by saying,” The party chairman wanted to take a refreshing break from political rumblings for a few hours.”

At least 60 people including 25 security personnel were part of the entourage.

Meanwhile, Dahal’s press advisor Om Sharma said that the PM is firm in his stance on taking action against CoAS Katawal for “mocking civilian supremacy”.

Seven-under Rohana joins Perera on top

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

KATHMANDU: Anura Rohana of Sri Lanka carded seven-under 65 to share lead with fellow countryman and amateur Mithun Perera on the second day of the Surya Nepal Masters here at the Gokarna Golf Club on Thursday.

Perera, who shared the first-round lead with Nepal No 1 pro Shiva Ram Shrestha at four-under 68, played a flawless bogey-free round of two-under 70 for a tournament total of six-under 138. Nepali pros faltered on the second day of the second event under the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2009-10 with Shiva Ram managing three-over 75 for a total of two-over 143, that left him five strokes behind the Sri Lankan leaders at tied seventh along with Kunal Bhasin (72) and Ramesh Kumar, who produced the day’s second best card of six-under 66.

Harinder Gupta, who shot even par 72 to add to his first-round score of 69, is third, while defending champion Shamim Khan, Nabin Mondal and Ashok Kumar, all from India, are tied for fourth at two-under 142. Khan shot one-under for the second straight day, while Mondal carded two-under and Ashok Kumar added one-over to his overnight score of three-under 69.

Deepak Thapa Magar, the only Nepali pro to card under-par round on the second day, completed the top 10 at one-over 145 after a round of one-under 71. Ramesh Nagarkoti, who was tied third at three-under 69 after the first round, shot five-over 77 today to slip down to 11th position. A total of 13 Nepali pros made the cut applied at 12-over 156. Out of the 25 local pros, 10 missed the cut while Krishna Man Rajbahak was disqualified as he was absent on tee time and Surya Sharma withdrew midway through the first round because of shoulder injury.

Apart from Shiva Ram, Thapa Magar and Nagarkoti, other Nepali pros who qualified for the last two rounds included Rabi Khadka, Sanjay Lama and Ram Thapa (148), Deepak Neupane (151), Mani Rai (153), Deepak Acharya and Purna Sharma (154), Ram Krishna Shrestha, Pashupati Sharma and Bishnu Neupane (155).

Rohana set the course on fire with a scintillating round of seven-under that included six birdies and an eagle against a lone bogey. Rohana had birdies on the first, fourth, seventh and ninth holes, while he dropped a shot on the par-three eighth to take a turn at three-under 33. On the back nine, he sank an eagle on the par-five 11th before carding birdies on the 12th and 16th in a bogey-free four-under 32.

Perera had a flawless round on the front nine as he made nine par-putts. On the turn, he carded two straight birdies on the par-five holes — 11 and 12 — to submit the two-under 70 card, that gave him the tournament total of six-under. Ramesh Kumar carded seven birdies against a lone bogey in his six-under 66. Nepal’s top pro Shiva Ram did everything possible to make the day forgettable. He three-putted from five yards, hit hazard from bunker and found water. “In all, it was not my day,” he said.

Starting the day from the 10th hole, Shiva Ram dropped a shot on the par-five 11 but managed a birdie on the next hole. He again dropped a shot on the par-three 13th and struggled for a double bogey on the par-five 15th to take a turn at three-over 39. Shiva Ram started the back nine with birdies on the first and shot another on the third hole.

But all went wrong after he had a double bogey on the par-four fourth and a bogey on the par-three fifth hole. He managed a birdie on the seventh to finish the back nine at even par 36. “I could not concentrate on my game today,” he said.

The 26-year-old pro, however, was not too much worried about the gap with the leaders. “I am just five strokes behind the leaders. It’s not a huge difference. And with two more rounds to go, I still have a chance to catch them up,” said confident Shiva Ram.

In amatur section, Jamail Hossain Mollah is distant second at 150, two strokes ahead of Nepal’s Rupak Acharya. wanchen Dhondup is further two strokes behind Acharya. Mohd Shohel (155) and Rashid Khan (156) are also in the fray.

It was also a bad day for former Indian Open winner Vijay Singh as he was disqualified this morning. Singh was barred to play from the second round after he was adjudged to have played the ball from wrong place on the first day. Mohd Shabuddin was also disqualified after he signed in the wrong second-round card.

Four players — Chitrajit Kalra, Anthony Chaot, Porus Chopra and Surya Sharma — have withdrawn from the event due to illness or injury.

Republic Day dearer to PM

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal said on Thursday that the Republic Day (May 28) should be given prominence over the People’s Democracy Day (April 24) once the statute is drafted and the peace process brought to a logical conclusion.

“Celebrating the People’s Democracy Day is a historic necessity. I wish to celebrate the Republic Day as the main event but we have so many historic moments to celebrate before that day,” Dahal said at a programme in Singha Durbar. “During this transitional phase, all these events hold historic significance.”

The government has formed a 418-member People’s Democracy Day Organising Committee under Dahal’s chairmanship. According to the programme schedule, the Nepal Army will blow the trumpet from Dharahara at dawn on April 24. Government officials, leaders, civil servants, teachers, students and commoners will have to gather at the Open Theatre before 10.30 am to take part in the celebrations.

Dahal said celebrating people’s democracy day is important because the mass movement brought the monarchy to its knees on April 24, 2006 and paved the way for the republican order. “Once we draft the constitution and take the peace process to a logical end, we will celebrate the Republic Day as the main event.”

Obama and Bernanke soothe markets

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

U.S. stocks markets were steady Wednesday, finishing little changed from the previous day.

President Barack Obama unveiled a new $275 billion plan designed to stem foreclosures on homes. The measure could affect up to 9 million homeowners. One of the hurdles to the housing crisis has been the inability of major mortgage lenders Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae to lend above 80% of a home’s value, denying stretched homeowners a chance to refinance on lower interest rates. This barrier will be removed under the new plan.

Fed Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke highlighted the seriousness of the current economic crisis in a speech to the National Press Club. In his opening remarks he noted the town in which he grew up in, in South Carolina, now had an unemployment rate above 14%, and his former family home where he spent his early years was now being foreclosed on.

Bernanke noted that the many measures taken by the Federal Reserve were slowly starting to take effect.

The day’s trading in equities followed major falls on all indices on Tuesday, with the Dow dropping nearly 300 points.

It was a different day Wednesday as stocks remained steady throughout.

At the close of trading the Dow Jones Industrials were up 3.03 points or 0.04% at 7,555.

The Nasdaq Composite was off 2.69 points or 0.18% at 1,467.

The Standard and Poor’s 500 was up 0.02 of a point at 789.19.

The U.S. dollar was also steadier. It was up against the euro at 1.2538 around the New York close. Against the yen it advanced to 93.80, but was unchanged versus the British pound at 1.

The Swiss franc fell sharply to 1.1771. The Australian dollar was steady at .6380, while the Canadian dollar was little changed at 1.2588.

India has no better friend and partner than US, asserts Obama

Monday, January 26th, 2009

(IANS)

Greeting India on its Republic Day, President Barack Obama Monday said the Indian people ’should know that they have no better friend and partner than the people of the US’.

‘Our nations have built broad and vibrant partnerships in every field of human endeavour,’ he said, sending ‘the warmest greetings of the American people to the people of India’ on the occasion of India’s Republic Day.

‘It is our shared values that form the bedrock of a robust relationship across peoples and governments,’ Obama said.

‘Those values and ideals provide the strength that enables us to meet any challenge, particularly from those who use violence to try to undermine our free and open societies.

He also wished Prime Minister Manmohan Singh a quick recovery after the heart surgery.

Here is the text of Obama’s ‘Message on the occasion of India Republic Day’:

‘As the people of India and people of Indian origin in America and around the world celebrate Republic Day on January 26, I send the warmest greetings of the American people to the people of India. Together, we celebrate our shared belief in democracy, liberty, pluralism, and religious tolerance.

‘Our nations have built broad and vibrant partnerships in every field of human endeavour. Our rapidly growing and deepening friendship with India offers benefits to all the world’s citizens as our scientists solve environmental challenges together, our doctors discover new medicines, our engineers advance our societies, our entrepreneurs generate prosperity, our educators lay the foundation for our future generations, and our governments work together to advance peace, prosperity, and stability around the globe.

‘It is our shared values that form the bedrock of a robust relationship across peoples and governments.

‘Those values and ideals provide the strength that enables us to meet any challenge, particularly from those who use violence to try to undermine our free and open societies. As the Indian people celebrate Republic Day all across India, they should know that they have no better friend and partner than the people of the United States.

‘It is in that spirit, that I also wish Prime Minister Singh a quick recovery.

India has no better friend and partner than US, asserts ObamaSame promise and empty rhetoric from a 27 years old super speech writer. What did India get the last 8 years? A broken world economy and unstable midlle east.

Nagpur Test: Dhoni, Ganguly look to consolidate on Tendulkar`s good work

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Zeenews Bureau

Nagpur, Nov 06: India would look forward to amass a big total on the second day of the final Test match against Australia as the good work done by centurion Sachin Tendulkar and half-centurions VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag placed the hosts in a commanding position despite losing five wickets. with the combo of Sourav Ganguly and skipper MS Dhoni unbeaten at the crease, the stage was set for a showdown on the second day’s morning.

The hosts were 311/5, with Sourav Ganguly (unbeaten 27), playing his last Test, and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni holding forte when bad light forced an early end to Day One’s play with 3 overs from the stipulated quota still to spare.

The Dada-Dhoni combo would be looking to build on the day’s performances on day 2 and take India past the 400 run-mark. The visitors on the other-hand would be looking for the crucial breakthrough that will expose India’s tail.

The opening day was dominated by two individuals, as stark in contrast as chalk and cheese. While India had Sachin Tendulkar to thank for notching up 300 plus score on day 1, Aussies found an unlikely hero in off-spinner Jason Kreiza.

Tendulkar had slammed his 40th Test century to give India a solid platform and bat Australia out of the match. The effort was marked with some exceptional shot-making and sharp running between the wickets as the Mumbai Maestro seemed to have turned back the clock on his glory years. He was eventually dismissed by Mitchell Johnson, adjudged LBW to a back of a length spot delivery. He departed for a majestic 109 off 188 balls, in a knock laced with 12 hits to the fence. He however, had his share of luck, as he was dropped twice- by Johnson on 85 and by Brett Lee on 96.

Meanwhile, continuing on his rich vein of form which he seems to reserve for the Aussies, VVS Laxman marked his 100th Test appearance with yet another half-century against the world champions, his 37th in his illustrious career. But just as he looked set for a big knock, he succumbed to the Australian wrecker-in-chief of the day, Jason Krejza.

Earlier in the day, the morning session came with a mixed bag of goodies for both the teams as India started off well with Sehwag’s pyrotechnics with Ponting’s men turning the tables towards the end of the session with three quick wickets.

After Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat, Sehwag had got the proceedings off to a flier with his brilliant stroke-making and slammed a quick fire fifty.

Debutant M Vijay played perfect foil to him as the duo rotated the strike effectively and got the boundaries with ease, creating problems for the Aussie bowlers.

With run-rate plummeting at 5 an over, Australia had got their first breakthrough of the morning in the form of Vijay wicket. The 24 year old, who struck 33, showing great promise and poise in the middle until he was caught behind the wicket by Brad Haddin off Shane Watson’s short of a length delivery. With the much needed breakthrough in the bag, Aussies step up the pressure as Krejza got his first Test wicket in the form of Rahul Dravid for a duck.

However, Krejza actually announced his arrival on the world stage when he claimed the prized scalp of Virender Sehwag with a beauty. Just when the Delhi dasher seemed to become unstoppable, bludgeoning the bowlers into submission, Kreiza bowled a well disguised turner that was dragged onto the stumps by Sehwag in an attempt to run it to third man. The ‘Sehwag show’ that lasted just 69 balls, yielded 66 runs. He struck 9 fours and a mighty six over long on of Kreiza.

With India placed at a shaky 116/3, it was left to old hands Tendulkar and Laxman to revive fortunes.

Australia (Playing XI): Matthew Hayden, Simon Katich, Ricky Ponting(c), Michael Clarke, Mike Hussey, Shane Watson, Cameron White, Brad Haddin(w), Brett Lee, Jason Krejza, Mitchell Johnson

India (Playing XI): Murali Vijay, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Saurav Ganguly, Mahendra Singh Dhoni(w/c), Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Amit Mishra, Ishant Sharma

Sachin belongs only to Marathi and we should allow him to play outside Maharashtra. Marathis should be oonfined to Maharashtra only. BJP MP Shanawaz Hussain said in Parliament last week that “Hindi Speaking People has been meted out inhuman treatment by Marathis in Maharashtra worse than Pakistan gives to Hindus there”.

Marathis have started propaganda war on various forums against Hindi speaking people saying non-Marathis are taking their jobs.

unfortunate thing is that even educated Marathis (Doctors, Engineers,Journalists, Advocates are working for Shiv Sena, MNS and have launched false propaganda war on differnt social networking forums against their own hindu brethren. All our PMs invested in southern states fearing Pakistani and Chinese attacks in northern states as they are closer to borders. That is the reason north India lacks industries. Indians tax payers money has been invested in building Bombay and no community can claim that being marathis they should be given all jobs without merit.

Today Marathi criminals are asking names of Hindi speaking poeple in different places in Maharashtra and are beating and killing them on hearing that they belongs to hindi cow belt. Police, law and order has been hijacked by regionalistic and linguistic terrorists Marathis.

The bottomline is “Bombay should be declared separate state”.

abe CHOOTIYEE Rohan ,,,saale likanhne se pehle soch to le ki kyaa likh rahaa hae…

I am proud that a Hindu icon from Bharat makes such things in the world cricket. My salute to Sachin, ram naresh Sarwa, Shive narin chadrapal,A. kalicharan, Rohan Kanhai. We love Sachin.Vande mataram,Bharat mata ki jai.
