West Indies beat Nepal by seven wickets ICC U-19 Cup

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

No surprise was on the cards this time around. The giant-killers Nepal failed to produce any upsets in the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup, going down heavily against the West Indies by seven wickets in the rain-shortened 27-over Plate Championship final at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.
Electing to bat first, Nepal were bowled out for mere 74 runs — the lowest by a Nepali side in 32 youth World Cup matches — in 25.3 overs with only two batsmen scoring in double figures. West Indies surpassed the total in 14.2 overs losing three wickets. The previous lowest was 89 against hosts Sri Lanka in the Super League stage in 2000.
Known for producing big upsets in the previous editions, Nepal showed no signs this time against the mighty Test-playing nations. Nepal had in the past defeated Test-playing nations South Africa thrice, and Pakistan, New Zealand and Bangladesh once. Nepal beat Kenya and Zimbabwe this time around.
Sagar Khadka top-scored with unbeaten 17. He struck only one boundary in his 55-ball innings while skipper Paras Khadka was the next biggest contibutor with 12 runs. The major shares of the Nepali total came from sundaries (18). Jason Dawes was the pick of the West Indies bowlers with 4-18 off six overs while Darren Bravo took 3-9 from five overs. Delorn Johnson, Shacaya Thomas and Sharmarh Thomas also bagged one wicket each.
West Indies were never in trouble chasing 74 after Kieran Powell (24) and A Barath (15) put on 33-run opening stand. West Indies lost their three wickets for only 21 runs but D Bravo and S Jacobs guided the Carribbeans safely home. Bravo remained unbeaten on 24 and Jacobs four not out. Amrit Bhattarai claimed two wickets (2-25) and Rahul Vishwokarma one (1-16) for Nepal.
Meanwhile, off-spinner Yaseen Vallie snared four wickets to lift South Africa to a 98-run win over defending champions Pakistan in the rain-affected semi-final of the main event. South Africa will meet India in the final on Sunday.
Pakistan initially chased South Africa’s 260 in 50 overs on Friday, but a downpour cut into playing time and the target was revised to 252 in 47 overs. A second rain interruption forced the match to spill over to Saturday.
Pakistan were 86-2 from 18.5 overs when play stopped on Friday, needing another 166 runs in 169 balls. But Pakistan lost their remaining eight wickets for only 67 runs on Saturday, and were dismissed for 153 in the 40th over. The loss ended Pakistan’s hopes of lifting the trophy for the third straight time.

Nepal pulled out a thrilling three-run win over Namibia in the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup in Penang.
Batting first, Nepal were all out for 164 runs in 49.5 overs before restricting Namibia to 161 in the 49th over. The last pair could only add one run before Gyanendra Malla bowled M Engelbrecht to end Nimibia’s march.
Earlier, Mahesh Chhetri anchored the Nepali innings with a patient 62- run innings hitting just three fours in his 134-ball innings. Chhetri got little support from the other end as Nepal lost their wickets in regular intervals. Chhetri was the seventh Nepali wicket to fall in the 48th over. Rom Shrestha scored 27-ball 26 with two hits to the fence and Aakash Gupta chipped in 21 from 26 deliveries that included two fours and a six. Nepal skipper Paras Khadka contributed 12.
Morne Engelbrecht, Keady Strauss and Louis van der Westhuizen took two wickets each. Namibia were struggling at 39-4 in the 25th over but the fifth wicket stand of 84 runs between van der Westhuizen (65) and Ewald Steenkamp (11) brought Namibia into the match. But the Namibians lost their last six wickets for 62 runs. Sean Silver was the next highest contributor with 81-ball 41.
Gyanendra Malla, Paras Khadka and Rahul Vishwokarma took two wickets each while Amrit Bhattarai and Raj Shrestha claimed one each. Both Nepal and Namibia will now play for the Plate Championship from Group ‘C’.
