PANIC Over Sherlyn’s Outrageous Bikini

Friday, September 5th, 2008

As the ‘outrageous’ singer and actress Sherlyn Chopra prepares to embark upon her first promotional tour for her new album ‘Dard-e-Sherlyn’, her show organisers are panicking.

Starting this Saturday, September 6, the newbie will begin her tour spanning seven prominent cities of India namely Delhi, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Pune, Vizag, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

But her organisers are losing sleep over the bold and flamboyant girl wearing her trademark diamond-encrusted bikini top and golden hot pants that she has famously worn in the new superhit video of her remix album.

They have been considering stringent security measures at all her promotional events across the country. Apart from expecting trouble from unruly crowds due to the skimpy attire, the organisers also feel it is very risky for her to wear the bikini top as it is actually studded with a couple of real diamonds on the sides of the top.

Special care was taken for this diamond-studded top when the video was shot at Filmistan Studio in Mumbai. In fact, Sherlyn had employed an extra lady assistant just to keep an eye on the top whenever she left it in her vanity van in between the shots.

“But while travelling from city to city, obviously the risk will dramatically increase. So it comes as no surprise, that the organisers are worried about Sherlyn’s protection, ” says her publicist Dale Bhagwagar.

“It’s a delicate-cum-volatile situation with extreme potential to spark off untoward incidents. Most of the organisers feel the risk is too big. It will require tremendous care and vigilance by the security personnel – for Sherlyn as well as for the diamond top, ” he adds.

“To be on the safe side, Sherlyn will perform with around six to eight bouncers in the stage’s vicinity, and four other plain-clothes security men, who will intermingle with the audience, to subtly tackle any troublemakers in the crowds, ” informs Bhagwagar.

After the runaway success of her first album ‘Outrageous’ on T-Series, Sherlyn emerged a diva, out to make men go weak in their knees. The second album ‘Dard-e-Sherlyn’ is her tribute to the original dreamgirl Hema Malini and takes off from her 1976 hit song “Mujhe dard rehta hai, dil mein dard rehta hai…” from the film ‘Dus Numbri’ co-starring Manoj Kumar. But the “Dard-e-Sherlyn” video has already attracted 19 cuts from the Censor Board and also invited the ire of Hema Malini. The yesteryear’s actress was obviously furious and upset when in a recent interview she spoke about Sherlyn with stinging sarcasm, stating, “I don’t even know why she’s linking me with a hot-hot thing.

She’s trying to change her image maybe with my name. If she’s doing this, poor thing, I wish her success, for all those who see nudity will be happy. But my name is Hema Malini and that won’t change for anything.

It can also be recalled that after being in discussion for appearing on the reality show ‘Bigg Boss’, this firebrand bikini babe was shown the door as she had suggested that the makers install cameras even in bathrooms of the House, so that she could flaunt her vast collection of colourful bikinis and inner wear while bathing.

She was keen to generate loads of teenage interest in the show from both sexes, but the makers had found her demand too outrageous and she was out.

Now she plans to fully utilise the next few weeks to aggressively promote her album ‘Dard-e-Sherlyn’ through events and endorsements.

Salman does an Akshay; dons a turban and a beard in Heroes

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Spicezee Bureau

Mumbai, Aug 21: ‘Singh is Kinng’ indeed! Following Akshay’s footsteps, it’s none other than the B-town macho man Salman Khan, who is all charged up to don the most happening look these days, a turban and a beard. The actor, who would soon be seen playing a Sardar in his forthcoming flick ‘Heroes’, is doing all that it takes to give his character all the authenticity.

The actor who is known for his intense and severe reactions has taken his turban pretty seriously as he is now following some important principles of the religion as long as he has the Sikh attire on.

It’s a known fact that Salman is a chain smoker and stops at nothing. However, we have been told that the actor did not lit the bud anytime he had the Sikh getup on.

Speaking to a news daily, Sallu’s manager, Vikas said, “Salman respects all religions and follows them sincerely. He knew that Sikhs generally don’t smoke as they are prohibited by their religion. So, taking that into consideration, he decided not to smoke during the shoot of this film. I remember sometimes he used to spend 10 hours in the same get up but didn’t smoke at all. Salman also grew his beard to make his get up look real. His respect for the turban made him stay away from cigarettes.

‘Heroes’, set to release early next year, is the story of two boys who embark on an adventurous road trip from Delhi to Chandigarh and then from Manali to Ladhakh. Besides Salman, the flick stars Vatsal Sheth, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Mithun Chakraborty, Sohail Khan, Preity Zinta, Dino Morea, Amrita Arora and Riya Sen.

Hmm.. looks like Salman’s out to prove that he is sure better than the real Singh. But for now, Akshay is the real ‘Kinng’!

History created as Abhinav Bindra win first gold medal for india

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

Beijing Abhinav Bindra won India’s first-ever individual Olympic gold medal when he claimed the men’s 10m Air Rifle shooting title here on Monday.

Athens Games champion Zhu Qinan of China won the silver and Henri Hakkinen of Finland took the bronze at the Beijing Shooting Hall on the outskirts of the Chinese capital.

Bindra, the 25-year-old businessman from the northern city of Chandigarh, followed his world championship title two years ago to finally win a landmark gold medal for his country.

In one of the most thrilling shooting finals in Olympic history, Bindra overcame a two-point deficit against Hakkinen and one point against Zhu after the qualification rounds to annexe the title.

The Indian trumped his rivals with the best finish of 104.5 in the 10-shot final as he went into the last shot level with Hakkinen on 689.7 points.

While Bindra secured his best score of 10.8 in the deciding shot, Hakkinen managed only 9.7 to concede the silver to Zhu, whose last shot was 10.5.

Bindra finished with a combined tally of 700.5, a fair distance behind Zhu’s Olympic record of 702.7 set in Athens.

Zhu came in with 699.7 this time and Hakkinen, a member of Finland’s armed forces who is taking part in his first Olympics, scored 699.4 points.

India, winners of eight field hockey gold medals, had never won an individual Olympic title before Bindra’s feat.

The previous best was trap shooter Rajyavardhan Rathore’s silver at Athens, while there were bronze medals for wrestler Khasaba Jadhav (1952), tennis star Leander Paes (1996) and woman weightlifter Karnam Malleswari (2000).

Breaking news from India Ahmedabad on serial blast

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

Ahmedabad, July 26: A day after a series of explosions rocked the IT city of Bangalore, seventeen blasts went off in Ahmedabad Saturday evening. The areas targeted are Maninagar, Isanpur, Narol circle, Bapunagar, Hatkeshwar, Sarangpur bridge, Sarkhej, Odhav, Sardar Patel market, Civil hospital, Juhapura, Ambur tower building, Raipur and Gowribhadi. Reports suggest that nearly 30 people have been killed and 100 others injured. Lashkar and HuJI have claimed responsibility for the attack.

Helpline No: 09873603313.
Ahmedabad Control Room No: 256301006900

The Prime Minister has announced ex gratia payment of Rs 1 lakh for the kin of those killed in explosions. The injured will be given Rs 50,000/- each. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has also announced compensation of Rs five lakhs to the families of those killed in the serial blasts. The state government has also announced compensation of Rs 50,000 to the injured.

17 in 90 minutes

All blasts went off in a span of 90 minutes starting 6:45 pm.

The first two blasts were reported in Chakla area of Raipur and Narole Circle of Maninagar. Then another blast was reported from Saranpur area of Raipur. Soon after another followed in Maninagar again.

Maninagar also happens to be the constituency of Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Bapu Nagar and Diamond Market are in the Old City area which is very congested particularly on Saturday evening. Splinters from the explosion set off small fires in some areas.

A seventh explosion took place in Sarkhej. The bomb here went off in CNG bus.

In another market near Sabarmati River, eyewitness accounts suggest that two men were seen throwing a bag near the shops. Immediately after there was an explosion.

News has also come of blasts from Isanpur, Hatkeshwar, Amraiwadi, Govindvadi, Sattar Bapa Nagar, Johapura and Saraspur.

In the second wave of explosions, four blasts went off near hospitals, perhaps with the intention of hitting emergency services, which would have by then be struggling to cope with the casualties. Another blast was reported close to the trauma centre of one of Ahmedabad’s biggest hospitals, the Civil Hospital, where most of the victims were being rushed.

There are also reports that some explosions were in very close periphery. Again this may have been done to maximise casualties as rescuers were gathering to help the victims of the initial blasts.

Nature of Blasts

Though details are sketchy, it is believed that most of the bombs may have been placed on cycles, like was done Jaipur in May this year.

According to intelligence sources, the bombs were crude in nature which may have been set off by timer devices. The bombs contained parts of micro processors and quartz.

The same elements were found in bombs that went off in Bangalore yesterday.

Rescue Operations & High Alert

Police and ambulances immediately rushed to all the sites that had been targeted. All the injured have been rushed to the Civil and LG hospital.

A live bomb was found in the Gandhinagar Kalol area in the combing operations after the blast. The bomb was fixed with a timer device which was set to go off on 12 o’clock. Bomb disposal squads were out in full force sanitizing different parts of the city. Ahmedabad has been cordoned off from the rest of the state as authorities don’t want tensions to flare up.

Delhi, Mumbai, and other metros have been put on high alert. As has Tamil Nadu after indications that the ancient Meenakashi Temple may be on target. Security has been beefed up at all major temples as a precautionary measure.

Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh have also been put on high alert.

The pattern of blasts in Ahmedabad seems very similar to those in Bangalore. However, the intensity of the explosions in Ahmedabad is slightly higher than those used in yesterday’s attack.

They also look like a very coordinated effort by terror organisations create panic across the country.

The Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to the people to maintain peace and asked the people to cooperate in maintaining law and order in the state. Modi convened a emergency meeting at the police headquarter in Gandhinagar and reviewed the security situation.

LeT, HuJI claim responsibility

Lashkar-e-Toiba and Harkat-ul-Jehad-e-Islami have claimed responsibility for the Ahmedabad serial blasts.

Earlier, an organisation called Indian Mujahideen had sent an email warning of a wave of violence in Gujarat as a revenge for the riots in 2002. The email also warned Narnedra Modi, with an open challenge: “Stop us if you can”.

The 14-page email of the Indian Mujahideen also gave out the exact details of the cycle frame numbers that were going to be used and details of the exact locations. The previously unknown organization also took responsibility for the Mumbai and Jaipur blasts.

Claiming the Ahmedabad attack was against the post-Godhra violence in 2002, the group said that in the near future they will target the states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.

Centre sends help

Madhukar Gupta, Union Home Secretary while confirming reports over 14 blasts, said that the Centre was in touch with the state security agencies and would render all help necessary.

He informed the media that a NSG commando team has already been dispatched to Ahmedabad and another team would be dispatched on Sunday.

Referring to the remarkable similarity of the serial blasts with those that took place in Bangalore yesterday, and in Jaipur in May, he said that the government would probe into the probable link of the between the three serial blasts.

He said that while there was no specific input regarding Ahmedabad, all the states had recently been issued a general advisory. A meeting had also been held to review the progress made in terrorist strikes cases.

The Home Secretary also said that a meeting of the DGs and the state Home Secretary would be held in the next few days to review the situation.

Meanwhile the Home Minister said that high level meeting had been convened at 11 am Sunday morning to take stock of all the recent terror attacks.

Human trafficking involving Indians busted in Britain, New Zealand

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

London/Auckland/Chandigarh/Two human trafficking scams involving Indians, especially from Punjab, unearthed in two far-flung countries – New Zealand and Britain – showed the massive scale of the illegal operations and the criminal network that faked documents and identities with impunity. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) exposed a sophisticated illegal immigrant network in London, while 39 Indian youth went 'missing' in New Zealand during a religious tour.Ripples of both incidents involving Indians are already being felt in the multi-million Indian travel and immigration industry. In an undercover investigation, the BBC exposed a London-based criminal network that used fake passports, identity documents and human carriers to bring in illegal migrants into Britain. They were settled in around 40 safe houses in Southall, home to a large concentration of immigrants from India. Nearly all of the illegal migrants – called 'faujis' in criminal parlance – are said to be from Punjab.During the investigation, the BBC team met one of the agents, named Vicki, who was open about the fake documents he could obtain, and boasted about customers as far as Sheffield, Bradford and Coventry. Vicki said he could get people into the country on lorries, known as donkeys, organised by what he called his 'man in Paris', and told how he could provide a fake 'original' passport that had been 'checked' to beat security at a British airport. The BBC team met Indian employers who said they had no problem obtaining papers for the illegal workers, some of whom were willing to shell out huge sums of money for fake passports. There were Indian landlords renting out space to the 'faujis'. And, there was no shortage of work, though the workers are grossly underpaid.Surinder Sodhi, vice-president of Travel Corp, a Delhi-international travel agency, said the scam would have its repercussions on the tourism industry.'The travel segment is booming and these immigration scams could pose a threat to outbound tourism. Countries in Europe and New Zealand might become more stringent with issuing visas, and local immigration norms could be tightened for tourists,' Sodhi told IANS.'If a customer or traveller runs away on a tour, the entire process of packaging a holiday takes a beating, and then travel agents find it difficult to promote international destinations,' he said.In New Zealand, 39 Indians disappeared en route to attend the Catholic Church's week-long World Youth Day (WYD) festivities in Sydney. Three of the 39 'missing' Indians Thursday said that they had been cheated by their travel agents.'We are victims ourselves and we are not trying to cheat the system,' the three men, aged between 32 and 34, have told Joy Reid of the Radio New Zealand soon after meeting immigration officials along with two representatives of the Indian community in Auckland Thursday afternoon. But authorities in Punjab, from where bulk of human trafficking takes place, have not done much to stem the problem. Despite scores of tragic stories every month of men, women and even children being trafficked, the number of illegal immigrants from Punjab continues to rise.Congress legislator from Qila Raipur, Jassi Khangura, who gave up his British citizenship in 2006 to come back to Punjab, says the state government lacks the will power to stop illegal immigration. Khangura has been involved with several activities to curb illegal immigration.'The BBC investigation has shown how sophisticated the network is. The Indian and British governments have to initiate action at their respective ends. Effective measures need to be taken on the Indian side,' Khangura said.Khangura told IANS here: 'Given my experience, this illegal immigration is going to create such a mess that the British and other authorities will become very strict about immigration, and the genuine people will suffer.'Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and the Punjab Police know of the brokers in all corners of the state but don't want to take action. It is not difficult to identify people who are playing fraud with hundreds of youths by taking millions of rupees from them with the promise of taking them to Western countries,' he added. The two passport offices at Chandigarh and Jalandhar, which cater to the state, and the latest one at Amritsar which opened this month, are already termed as 'passport factories'. The Chandigarh and Jalandhar passport offices churned out 350,000 passports in 2007.There have been several reported incidents of youths being killed in other countries, especially in eastern Europe and in Africa, after being abandoned there by fake travel agents.Punjab-based Lok Bhalai Party (LBP) has been highlighting incidents of fake travel and immigration agents defrauding the youth of millions of rupees, women being cheated in marriage by fake grooms who come to Punjab for 'holiday marriages' and then run away, and several other immigration frauds. There are over 15,000 abandoned brides in Punjab, most of them young girls.A recent trend in Punjab is to lure young girls with the promise of immigration and then to sell them to people abroad or force them into prostitution in other countries. This is the second major expose of the illegal Indian immigrant network in Britain.Last year, independent Indian film maker, Savyasaachi Jain, released a documentary in India and Britain, titled 'Shores Far Away', on the subject. Jain filmed extensively in Britain and parts of eastern Europe to document the illegal migration route from India. The LBP claims that over 500 fake immigration agents had cheated Punjab youth of Rs.20 billion in recent years. It pointed out that 50,000 duped families, many of whom had sold their land, properties and earnings to the fake agents in return for passports, were crying for help.It pointed out that over 15,000 Punjabi youth were languishing in prisons in other countries after they were abandoned there by unscrupulous travel agents and arrested for staying illegally.
