Saptakoshi issue to be raised with India: Foreign Minister

KATHMANDU, Aug 24 - Newly appointed Foreign Minister Upendra Yadav Sunday said that he would strongly raise issue of the Saptakoshi disaster, its long-term solution and immediate relief to those affected by the floods in Nepal with the Indian government.Speaking at a programme organised in Kathmandu today, Yadav said that ...

...the southern neighbour, was chiefly responsible for the lack of timely maintenance of the Koshi Barrage. He said that he would seriously discuss the issues of the dams including the Koshi embankment, during his India visit in the offing.

Foreign Minister Yadav, who is also the coordinator of the Madhesi People’s Rights Forum, is scheduled to leave for India after four days to take part in a conference of foreign ministers.

Saying that the Indian government has suspended its twenty-four employees for their negligence in the wake of the Saptakoshi disaster, Minister Yadav informed that the government would also set up a high-level investigative commission to look into the Koshi embankment collapse.

The foreign minister also pointed the need of review of various treaties signed between Nepal and India in the past. He, however, said that his India visit will not include the issues.
