Republic Day dearer to PM

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal said on Thursday that the Republic Day (May 28) should be given prominence over the People’s Democracy Day (April 24) once the statute is drafted and the peace process brought to a logical conclusion.

“Celebrating the People’s Democracy Day is a historic necessity. I wish to celebrate the Republic Day as the main event but we have so many historic moments to celebrate before that day,” Dahal said at a programme in Singha Durbar. “During this transitional phase, all these events hold historic significance.”

The government has formed a 418-member People’s Democracy Day Organising Committee under Dahal’s chairmanship. According to the programme schedule, the Nepal Army will blow the trumpet from Dharahara at dawn on April 24. Government officials, leaders, civil servants, teachers, students and commoners will have to gather at the Open Theatre before 10.30 am to take part in the celebrations.

Dahal said celebrating people’s democracy day is important because the mass movement brought the monarchy to its knees on April 24, 2006 and paved the way for the republican order. “Once we draft the constitution and take the peace process to a logical end, we will celebrate the Republic Day as the main event.”
