KATHMANDU, July 19 - As the understanding with the CPN-Maoist went down, the CPN-UML and the Madhes-based parties have joined hands with the Nepali Congress (NC).A political agreement reached between the NC, the UML and the Madhes-based parties on Saturday morning, nearly an hour before the historical elections to pick ...
...country's first president and vice president started. The three parties have agreed to vote for NC in the presidential post, MPRF in the vice president and UML in the Constituent Assembly (CA) chairman. As per the agreement of the new alliance, the three parties will vote for NC's Dr Ram Baran Yadav as president and MPRF's Parmananda Jha as vice president during today's election underway at the CA venue in the capital. In a bid to find consensus, the NC had held separate formal and informal talks with the UML and the MPRF this morning. The previous political understanding between the CPN-Maoist and the CPN-UML crumbled after the Maoist maintained that the UML's outgoing General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal cannot be elected president.Earlier, the two mojor communist parties had agreed that the Maoist will support UML's presidential candidate and the UML will support the Maoist's candidate for the post of prime minister.Likewise, the Maoist had also made a deal with the MPRF to provide the post of vice president to the MPRF.With some 13 fringe parties left in the CA, coordination among the political parties is necessary for the presidential elections since no party in the CA holds a majority.
