International folk music fest from Nov 5

KATHMANDU, Oct 24 - To mark 100 years of music recording in Nepal and 25 years of commercialisation of Nepali music through establishment of Music Nepal, the Nepal Music Centre is hosting a four day long international folk music festival in the capital from November 5.

"International Folk Music Festival 2008" ...

...a first of its kind in the country, which aims at serving as a melting pot of both international and national artistes to promote folk music and instruments that reflect the rich and vibrant cultural traits of different countries.Five different countries are participating at the programme including Norway, India, Malawi, Palestine and South Africa who will star alongside Nepali artistes representing five development regions of the country.

All the Nepali folk music groups performing in the festival are the winners of the auditions that took place in different parts of the country. The selected groups are Sakhia-Paiya of the Tharus of Dang, Hudkeli Panche Baaja, a dance performed by the inhabitants of Dhangadi and Kailali and Kanchanpur Group of Rana Tharu of Kanchanpur, Kaura Naach of Gurung and Magar community of Gorkha, Satar Group of Satar people living in Jhapa and Dhime Group from central region.

NMC is a non-profit organisation and was established in 2006 with the vision of strengthening and stimulating musical atmosphere in Nepal by imparting formal music education and conducting music research.

The programme is being promoted by Nepal Tourism Board.
