India reiterates readiness to review all Indo-Nepal treaties
KATHMANDU, Aug 29 - The government of India reiterated its readiness to review all the treaties, including the 1950 Indo-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship, signed between Nepal and India in the past. In a meeting held at India’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday evening, Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukarjee urged ...
“We are ready to extend support if Nepal wants to review the past treaties,” Yadav quoted the Indian foreign minister. This is the first time the issue was taken seriously at the foreign ministry level, even if India had talked about the review of the treaties earlier.
“The meeting discussed Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s upcoming India visit,” our special correspondent quoted Yadav. While informing that India has issued the date of September 26 for the Nepali prime minister’s India visit, Minister Yadav said Nepal has asked for a new date earlier than that.
“We are striving to send the prime minister for India visit at the earliest possible time,” Yadav said.
Yadav said that the Indian foreign minister did not respond while he injected the issue of the prime minister’s recent China visit. He had urged India not to take Dahal’s China visit with suspicion.
Likewise, Minister Yadav had urged the Indian side to extend support to Nepal to deal with the inevitable aftermath of the Koshi barrage collapse.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Upendra Yadav had boarded a flight to Delhi on Thursday afternoon to take part in a foreign minister level meeting of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for MultiSectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).
Before leaving for India yesterday, Minister Yadav had said that he would discuss review of the past treaties signed between Nepal and India and short- and long-term solutions to the problems triggered by the Koshi River floods.
