India agrees to replace 1950 Treaty with new one

KATHMANDU, Sept 16 - Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Tuesday said that India has agreed to replace the 1950 Nepal-India Treaty with a new one.India is positive about reviewing other treaties signed with Nepal, the Prime Minister informed at a press conference in New Delhi, India ...

...his visit to India as “fruitful”, Dahal also said that India and Nepal have reached an agreement in principle to move the ties ahead in a new way in the changed context.

Prime Minister Dahal further informed that India is willing to build a special mechanism to review all India-Nepal agreements and pacts.

He said he discussed the replacement of the 1950 Treaty at  separate meetings with his Indian counterpart Dr Manmohan Singh, Indian National Congress Party chairman Sonia Gandhi and other politicians.

Moreover, he said that he also discussed the Koshi flood relief and resettlement of the displaced in Sunsari district, extension of the railway service in the Terai,  speeding up of work in the Pancheshwor Project, issues related to trade and transit, border dispute, hydro-electric sector and other issues of mutual interest with the Indian leaders.

He also held separate consultations with Railway Minister Laluprasad Yadav, former Prime Minister IK Gujral, leftist ministers Prakash Karat and Sitaram Yechuri today.

A joint official statement, on behalf of India and Nepal, will be made public later today.

A 50-member Nepali delegation led by Prime Minister Dahal had arrived here on Sunday for a five-day formal visit.
