Govt seeks Indian help to repair barrage

Kathmandu, August 19:

Ministry for Water Resource today requested India to help reconstruct the damaged parts of Koshi River embankment.

“We have sent a letter to the Indian Embassy through the foreign ministry seeking India’s help,” said Anup Upadhyaya, spokesperson for the ministry.

A meeting between Nepali and Indian officials is expected to ...

...held in Biratnagar tomorrow. Deputy Director General of Department of Water Induced Disaster Khom Raj Dahal, Deputy Director General of Department of Irrigation Anil Pokhrel and Regional Director of Department of Irrigation Kamal Regmi have left for Biratnagar. A team of Indian delegation is already there. The ministry has ensured security for the delegation, Upadhyaya said.

Indian Embassy has stated that the Indian technical team is ready to undertake protective measures, adding that this would be possible only if the team received necessary cooperation from the Government of Nepal and support from the local people.

Embassy statement adds that the Indian technical team has been in Nepal for several days to reinforce and strengthen the spurs and the embankment on the Saptakoshi River in

consultation with the local administration.

“However, despite repeated requests, the support from local administration had not been forthcoming. As a result, the work was frequently disrupted and delayed,” states the embassy.
