FNJ divided over memo to Kamal Thapa

Kantipur Report

KATHMANDU, Nov 12 - It appears that the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ), the umbrella organisation of Nepali scribes, is divided.  The apple of discord this time is submission of a memorandum to Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal (RPP-N) Chairman Kamal Thapa, asking him to help speed up ...

...drafting of a democratic constitution. Following the submission of the memorandum to Thapa, a staunch advocate of monarchy even after its abolishment, by an FNJ delegation on Wednesday, FNJ Treasurer Ramesh Bista issued a press release expressing sharp criticism over it.

"Asking a minister of the royal cabinet, which used to suppress the press, to draft a democratic statute 'immediately' is comical," he said talking to ekantipur. Thapa was the home minister during the then king's direct rule after the royal takeover and during the people's movement in 2006.

He further said that meeting Thapa who is not even a Constituent Assembly (CA) member is against the FNJ's ideological stance.

Bista also mentioned that the FNJ had earlier discussed the issue with the representatives of 25 political parties.

FNJ President Dharmendra Jha, however, said that he did not want to comment on the issue.
