Floods, landslides hit various parts of country

KATHMANDU, July 24 - Dozens of villages were hit by floods and landslides, destroying properties and displacing hundreds of people in the wake of incessant monsoon rainfall in various parts of the country. ...Tuesday evening.Flood at local Khado river burst open the dam near Biroul village forcing flood water into villages, including Dumari and Pakari. The water level in the villages has reached about one meter high, ruining foodstuff, clothing and other household belongings. Most flood affected villagers are currently sheltering on the rooftop of a local school.The flood also entered district headquarters Rajbiraj ward 10, deluging over a dozen government offices, including the District Administration Office, District and Appellate Courts, Drinking Water Office, Nepal Telecom and Zonal Police Office.Villages, including Tilathi, Launiya, Sakarpura, Babhavgama Kati and Mahadeva were also submerged after the dam at the bordering Indian village Kunauli broke open, unable to hold the surging water level of Khado River.Similarly, flood in Koshi River submerged Gobargada village displacing all residents. They are staying at the temples and schools of the bordering Indian village Ratanpura.Around 100 bigha of paddy at Bhardaha and Portaha villages were ravaged due to the flooded Mahuli River.Travel between Shitapur Bairganiya VDC and Maryadapur in Rautahat district has stopped after the flood at local Aduwa River swept away the bridge linking the two areas on Wednesday.Around dozen villages around Rautahat, including Inarbari, Patoura, Bhesdawa and Pathrabudhram have also been ravaged by flood.Meanwhile, locals of three villages of Khaptad VDC in Achham district have been forced to leave their homes following the frequent landslips in the villages due to incessant rainfall since the past one week.Over 650 people from Balyalat, Putru and Bherasain villages are taking shelter at a nearby jungle inside makeshift camps.Due to "apathy" of the local administration, these displaced villagers are reeling under food shortage. Most of them are suffering from viral influenza and gastroenteritis as no efforts have been initiated by the concerned side to help these villagers.Over a hundred students at Annapurna Bal Primary School of Khawang VDC ward 5 in Pyuthan district have stopped going to the school following landslides around the school area.Purna Bahadur Pun of the School Management Committee said parents have stopped sending their kids to study as the school building itself is at great risk of getting swept away in a landslide.
