Cameras to keep tabs on vendors

KATHMANDU, Nov 11 - Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) and Street Vendors Union (SVU) from Monday started capturing street vendors on movie cameras in order to keep tabs on their numbers and identity. Speaking to The Post, Deputy chief at Law Enforcement Unit of KMC, Raju Nath Panday, stressed the need ...

...the new initiative for proper identification of street vendors.

"No one can cheat us now," said Panday. "We can easily recognise each vendor and can cross-check identity.

The government set up the committee to find a long-term solution after street vendors agreed to registration and relocation at alternative sites.

"We believed we were almost through with the registering process for issuing identity cards. But the number of street vendors is swelling up in places we had temporarily set aside for their business," said Siva Prasad Kattel, president of National Federation of Industries and Commerce (NFIC). "The visualisation will help us determine true victims of the government drive.

A KMC estimate puts the number of street vendors in Kathmandu at 6,000.
