Scrap metal turns deadly for poor people of Kolkata

Sunday 3rd August, 2008 In India, four people, including a three-year-old child, have been killed and six others injured in an explosion in Kolkata.The explosion occurred in the poor area of Sarbamangala Ghat when a boy and some villagers tried to open an explosive shell they had collected ... ...scrap metal.The explosion killed two people on the spot, while two more succumbed to their injuries at the state-run hospital.The condition of three of the five admitted to the hospital was described as serious.The boy had shown the item to others who did not realise it was an explosive shell.They thought the object contained brass, which they could have sold to earn some money.When they gathered in the evening to open the object, the bomb exploded.Police say the shell was possible from the nearby Cossipore Gun and Shell Factory.The explosion, coming close on the heels of the serial blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad, kept the police on alert, with a large police contingent, including bomb disposal squad personnel, rushing to the area.
