Ex-students' gift to their school: teachers from US
The initiative was started by former students of the school who are settled in US.Americans Catherine Biddle and Melissa Irvins, along with NRI teachers Venisha Gandhi and Priya Garg have come to Kadod to teach English to the students of the school.There are about 1000 students in the school, a majority of whom are tribals and the school authorities are tryingto make them proficient in English."It was a bit difficult to communicate at first, but we are slowly building a rapport with the students," says Catherine."It is a challenging task, but these students are both sincere and talented and very eager to learn," explains Melissa.Over 100 former students of the school are settled in the US, and have formed the trust because of whom the American teachers have come to the village to teach.Two-years-ago, the school's alumni formed the Nanubhai Naik Foundation Trust after the name of a former Principal which pays the teachers' salaries.In 2007 the Trust President Raju Shah came to the school and inquired what the school lacked, he was told the students were facing problems in English."The Adivasi children are brilliant, but have no exposure to English.

The exams were held from March 17 to 27.The pass percentage this time was 63.This is 5.09 per cent higher than last year.This year too, the board did not publish the list of toppers.According to the result, 1,95,689 out of 3,07,078 examinees got through.Out of 59,963 examinees, a total of 19,335 examinees passed the exam, which is 32.24 per cent of the total.Out of 307,078 regular students, 112,975 boys and 82,714 girls passed the exam.The pass percentage for boys and girls stood at 67.91 and 58.A total of 6,266 boys and 3,616 girls passed with distinction.Altogether 74,707 examinees45,357 boys and 29,350 girls secured first division.A total of 105,592 examinees58,291 boys and 47,301 girlssecured second division. Suspected militants have blown up an English medium girls' school in Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province, the News Network International (NNI) news agency reported on Friday.The police said a bomb exploded at a Girls Model School on Thursday night in a village, some 200 km from the provincial capital of Peshawar.The blast damaged the building, the report said.The police said some unidentified people had distributed leaflets in the village a few days ago, asking parents not to send their daughters to that school as it was giving English education.The guard of the school said he was asleep when the blast took place....[Education] 90-year-old accepts high school diploma in Mich.
DETROIT - John Lawrence Locher has accomplished many things in his 90 years, including living through the Great Depression, fighting in the Pacific during World War II and a long career with General Motors.But missing was the diploma whose pursuit he abandoned in the early 1930s to help feed his family in Detroit.Locher checked it off his list, wearing his cap and gown in Detroit Southwestern High School's 2008 commencement ceremonies Monday night - more than 70 years after he dropped out."I feel 100 percent lighter," he said. The European Union's Erasmus Mundus scholarships for the academic year 2008-09 have been given to 2,000 students and 450 teachers from outside Europe, of which 164 have been selected from India, EuAsiaNews reported Friday.The scholarships allow students to study in Europe for one or two years and obtain a Master's degree from one of the 103 Erasmus Mundus masters courses offered by the Consortia of European higher education institutions, the European Commission said in a statement Thursday.One of the characteristic features of the Erasmus Mundus programme is that student grant holders are allowed to follow their courses in at least two universities located in different European countries....[Education] EC to give $100m for education sector
