Deccan beat Bangalore to win IPL

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

: Deccan Chargers held their nerves till the very end in a thrilling final to emerge Champions of the DLF IPL 2009 beating Royal Challengers by 6 runs on Sunday. Chargers, who had finished last on the points table last year, outclassed and outplayed their opposition Royal Challengers Bangalore in all aspects to lift the Trophy that was won by Rajasthan Royals in the first edition.

RP Singh started it all when he dismissed Jacques Kallis cheaply. Pragyan Ojha followed him up with two quick wickets dismissing Manish Pandey and Roelof van der Merwe in quick succession. He later dismissed Praveen Kumar in his last over to take his match tally to 3 wickets.

Harmeet Singh and Andrew Symonds struck twice each to break the backbone of Bangalore’s batting and making them bite Johannesburg’s dust. Put into bat first, the Men in Blue started off on a bad note with Anil Kumble striking gold off the second ball of the innings when he rattled Gilly’s timber. Jumbo went on to strike every time he brought himself on and finished with figures of 4 for 16 off four overs. He played a major role in restricting the Deccan Chargers to a modest 143.

The silver lining in the Chargers’ innings was the fifty run partnership between Herschelle Gibbs and Rohit Sharma who joined hands after Symonds departed cheaply. Gibbs went on to bring up his half century to save Deccan some pride and put up a modest total for Bangalore to chase.

Football: Taiwan Power Company stuns Nepal Police

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Chinese Taipei league champions Taiwan Power Company stunned Nepal Police Club (NPC) 3-2 in the second match of the AFC Presidents’ Cup Group A qualifiers at Dashrath Stadium Thursday.

NPC had taken a playful lead in the 21st minute through Yogesh Shrestha but Taiwan replied back in a minute. Police goalie Ritesh Thapa made a blunder and Peng Pao struck to level the score.

After the re-start, NPC’s defense line was caught sleeping and Lin Po Yuan scored an easy goal in the 1st minute giving Taiwan Power Company a 2-1 lead. The visiting team was then awarded a penalty kick when Rakesh Shrestha fouled a Chinese player inside the D-box. Taiwan Power Company sent the spot kick into the net for a 3-1 lead.

Chetan Ghimire cut the deficit in the 84th minute but that was not enough to save the match.

“We lost the match due to our own mistakes”, police coach Birat Krishna Shrestha said. Taiwan Power coach Chen Jen said they were lucky to win the match.

In the other match played earlier, WAPDA of Pakistan held defending champions Regar Tadaz of Tajikistan to a goalless draw.

Lewis in court for smuggling cocaine

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Former England all-rounder Chris Lewis is being tried in a court here for allegedly smuggling 140,000 pound worth of cocaine into Britain inside his cricket bag.

Jurors were told that the 41-year-old ex-cricketer was stopped by customs officers at Gatwick airport and found with the drug hidden in liquid form in five tins of fruit and vegetable juice, stashed in his kit bag, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Lewis was on his way back from the Caribbean island of St. Lucia in December, where he told officials he had been visiting family.

As well as the tins, border officials discovered a cannabis grinder and a paperback book containing Rizla papers which both tested positive for traces of marijuana, it is alleged.

When questioned at Gatwick, Lewis, who was also carrying a Prada ‘man bag’, said he had packed the luggage himself and was not carrying anything for anyone else.

But when told his luggage had tested positive for cocaine, he asked: ‘Could there be some mistake?’ before answering no questions during interviews, Croydon Crown Court heard.

The cricketer was allegedly smuggling the cocaine alongside associate Chad Kirnon, 27, who was found with three tins of dissolved cocaine in his luggage, it was claimed.

India out of Asia Cup hockey medal race

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Defending champions India were knocked out of medal contention in the Asia Cup hockey tournament after they were held 2-2 by China in their concluding league fixture here Tuesday.

India, who had lost 2-3 to Pakistan in their first match, needed a win against China to qualify for the semi-finals from the three-team pool. However, after taking a 2-0 lead in the first-half, India surrendered the initiative as China, who had drawn 1-1 with Pakistan, struck twice after resumption.

India thus finished their league engagements with one point while Pakistan topped the pool with four, followed by China (2).

In an action-packed encounter, the Indians looked well set to win when Sandeep Singh converted two penalty corners in the 31st and 34th minutes with China very much on the defensive.

However, the Indians had not reckoned with the speed and fitness of the Chinese who, on resumption, went on a full-scale attack to apply relentless pressure.

The Chinese efforts bore fruit as they made an indirect penalty corner conversion in the 45th minute to get back into the game.

As the minutes ticked by India made a few forays but, as in the past, they were let down by some poor finishing with their forwards unable to complete threatening moves.

India forced their third penalty corner in the 51st, but Sandeep’s feeble push could not beat the Chinese defence.

At the other end, China struck the equalizer in the 59th minute through their Beijing Olympics star Yu Yang, who found the boards from a set-piece free-hit action.

Thereafter, a desperate India made a few attempts to score, but apart from wasting another penalty corner 50 seconds from the close, they could not get a clear look at the Chinese goal.

Manchester United reclaim lead

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Manchester: Carlos Tevez helped Manchester United take a giant stride towards the Premier League title as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side coasted to victory over Manchester City at Old Trafford today.

Tevez, whose future at United is in doubt, scored in the 2-0 victory which sent Ferguson’s side three points clear at the top of the table with three games remaining. Cristiano Ronaldo had given the hosts an early lead before Argentina striker Tevez doubled the lead on the stroke of half time.

Tevez joined United in the 2007 close season on a two-year loan deal which ends this summer. He has expressed his frustration at failing to cement a regular starting place in the side and was quoted in a national newspaper as saying he thinks he will leave because “I have not been treated as a member of the family”.

Tevez celebrated his goal by running over the main stand, close to where the United manager was sat, and cupping his ears while the crowd chanted “Fergie, Fergie sign him up”.

The result leaves the Champions League finalists requiring just four points from their remaining three matches to be crowned champions of England for a record-equalling 18th time.

On Saturday, Steven Gerrard had fired Liverpool back to the top of the League with a 3-0 win over West Ham. Two first-half goals from Gerrard and a late strike by substitute Ryan Babel had given Rafael Benitez’s side a comfortable win and lifted them temporarily above United on the strength of their superior goal difference.

At the other end of the table, West Brom gave their supporters reason to believe another great escape from relegation could be possible after a 3-1 win over Wigan. The victory, combined with Hull’s 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Stoke, lifted West Brom to within three points of safety with two matches left to play.

Blackburn are virtually — if not quite mathematically — safe after moving to 40 points with a 2-0 win over Portsmouth. Likewise, Sunderland pulled five points clear of the drop zone after a goalless draw at Bolton. Meanwhile, Fulham inflicted further pain on Aston Villa, who have now won just once in 11 matches after a 3-1 defeat at Craven Cottage.

Spanish La Liga MADRID: Barcelona can win the Spanish championship for the 19th time with a win against Villarreal after double champions Real Madrid waved the white flag in the title race with a 3-0 loss at Valencia on Saturday.

Real trail Barcelona by seven points and Pep Guardiola’s side will be crowned champions with three games to spare if they beat Villarreal in their next match. Real were outclassed as two goals in three minutes laid the foundations for a comfortable Valencia win. Juan Mata scored in the 29th before David Silva netted a second in the 32nd minute. Ruben Baraja added the third in the second half.

Valencia move four points behind Sevilla, 3-1 winners over Real Mallorca, and more importantly, open a four-point gap over Champions League rivals Atletico Madrid and Villarreal. Sevilla still hold a four-point gap over Valencia after a 3-1 comeback win over Mallorca. Also, Athletic Bilbao warmed up for Wednesday’s King’s Cup final against Barcelona with a 1-0 win over troubled Real Betis.

Shoaib Akhtar selection under fire

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Islamabad: Pakistan’s retention of out-of-form veteran paceman Shoaib Akhtar for next month’s Twenty20 World Cup has drawn some sharp criticism within the country.

Akhtar, nicknamed the Rawalpindi Express, took just three wickets in the four one-day internationals of the just-completed series against Australia in the United Arab Emirates. That continued a poor recent run of form, as Akhtar attempts to kickstart a career often interrupted by injury and disciplinary bans.

“Shoaib Akhtar may be dying to play for Pakistan but why is Pakistan dying to play Shoaib Akhtar,” asked English daily The News on Sunday. The fast bowler was dropped after playing two one-dayers against Sri Lanka, claiming just one wicket and not completing a quota of 10 overs in any of the games. Later, he postponed an operation on his troubled knee and opted to sit out from the two-Test series against Sri Lanka.

“He sat on the sidelines more than run on the field. He has been cited for misbehavior repeatedly…. and yet he still manages to get $37,302 ’salary’ from PCB plus all the perks. How does the man do it? Are the selectors compromised?” The News asked.

Former Test batsman Zaheer Abbas also recently advised Akhtar to retire from international cricket as he thought the paceman was not physically fit to compete in international cricket. “It’s better he should quit playing international cricket, he looked unfit and was wayward,” Abbas said after Pakistan lost the series against Australia.

Akhtar could not complete his quota of 10 overs in any one of the four matches against Australia while in the fielding he too look rusty. Akhtar has a checkered history of indiscipline and fitness problems and only made his comeback to international cricket in January against Sri Lanka after 14 months out.
